Canada on top after day one

Dubai , 5 July 2008

Canada will be looking to bat Bermuda out of the game on day two of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match taking place at King City , Ontario after its hard-working bowlers did their job on day one.

On a good batting track, Bermuda won the toss and elected to have first use of it but immediately lost the initiative with both openers finding themselves back in the pavilion with just one run on the board.

But then Irving Romaine’s men dug in and put together three good partnerships to give the islanders hope. John Celestine (47) and Steven Outerbridge (79) added 77 runs for the third wicket before Celestine then fell leg-before wicket to left-arm spinner Sunil Dhaniram.

Romaine then shared a stand of 41 runs with Outerbridge, before the skipper was caught off Henry Osinde’s bowling for 30. Outerbridge’s watchful innings eventually came to an end 21 runs short of his century and then the tail offered little resistance as Bermuda was all out for 237.

Dhaniram was the pick of Canada ’s attack, ending with figures of 4-70 off a marathon 34.4 overs. He was given good support by Osinde (2-22) and Eion Katchay 2-54, who had made the crucial early breathroughs.

At the close of play, Canada coach Pubudu Dassanayake said there had been a bit of turn in the pitch at times and some low bounce but it is essentially a good batting wicket and with good concentration, application and stroke selection, he is confident his batsmen can secure a first innings lead as they closed the day on 14 without loss after seven overs.

The ICC Intercontinental Cup has quickly grown in stature and profile since its inception three years ago and now the ICC’s premier first-class tournament is an integral part of the Associate Members’ cricket schedule.

Having previously been designed around a two-group, three-day format, the event has evolved into an eight-team, round-robin and truly global tournament featuring four-day cricket which gives those teams who do not play Test cricket the chance to experience the longer form of the game.

Scotland won the first ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004, beating Canada in the final, while Ireland has been victorious in both events since then, beating Kenya in the 2005 decider and Canada in the 2006-07 event.

The final of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2007-08 will take place in November 2008 at a venue yet to be confirmed.
