ICC confirms agreement with IS Bindra over scope of role as Principal Advisor

Dubai, 31 August 2008

ICC President David Morgan today confirmed he had agreed with Inderjit Bindra the scope of the latter’s role as ICC Principal Advisor.

Mr Bindra, a former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and a key figure in the success of two ICC Cricket World Cups in the Asian sub-continent in 1987 and 1996, has been engaged initially on a two-year consultancy agreement.

The current Punjab Cricket Association President will focus on developing the game in China*, implementing the ICC Vision**, assisting relations between the ICC and its members and working with host members to ensure the success of ICC events.

ICC President David Morgan said: “Inderjit has already been acting in the role of ICC Principal Advisor since July but we have now agreed the areas he will focus on and I am delighted to have done so.

“He brings a wealth of experience to the ICC, not least in his ability to pull together major projects, and with the number of major events we have between now and 2015 that experience will be invaluable.

“We have already made strides, alongside the Asian Cricket Council, in developing the game in China and realize it is a long-term project rather than something that will come together in just a handful of years.

“With Inderjit now joining us to provide added impetus in this area we have the chance to take the game in China to the next level.”

Inderjit Bindra said: “I am very pleased to have formalized my role within the ICC and having already worked alongside David for the past two months I look forward to continuing to do so.

“My vision of the role of Principal Advisor is simple: to do whatever I can, alongside the ICC’s members, to strengthen the game and the ICC’s role within it.

“The work in developing the game in China is exciting. It has a huge potential for growth and, with the Asian Cricket Council, we will explore ways of ensuring cricket is able to get a secure foothold within the country that we can continue to build upon.”

**The ICC Vision is: “As a leading global sport, cricket will captivate and inspire people of every age, gender, background and ability while building bridges between continents, countries and communities.”

Rohit's temperament his greatest asset

Javagal Srinath

Any ardent Indian cricket fan would have asked for one thing, a 4-1 result in the series. No doubt it's hard not to be complacent after winning a series. The best of best teams has bitten dust in being contended. It all happens in the context of giving a chance to player's who have not played enough on the tour. But the fact remains that the chances of winning is quite remote when the reserve players make it into the side. I thought it would have been a good tendency to continue winning irrespective of where the series stands. I guess the gains would have been plenty in winning the last match than experimenting with the reserves. My only contention is that the team should not jeopardize the new found upward mobility by being complacent.
Nevertheless, it is time to measure the gains and losses from this series. The biggest plus has come from Dhoni's strong leadership. His communication and inspiring press messages have had a huge bearing on the players. On this trip Dhoni's mantra has been "collective efforts Vs individual performance". An essential and effective method in bringing the team together. Dhoni made it clear that a small contribution aligned to the team's interest is more important than stints of individual brilliance.
Seems like both the captain and the coach have successfully addressed the concerns of the youngsters and have tempered the irrational exuberance of the seniors in the side. To be honest with the Indian cricket history, the problems of the incumbent captain and the seniors in the side always existed in a subtle way. Intermittently but with justifiable pride Dhoni has spoken about his teams laurels.

The bowling side has clicked like an engine well-oiled. The set patterns with which they attacked Srilanka's top batsmen suggested a definite plan in place. Zaheer and Munaf's perseverance on probing off stump line with the new ball brought back the much required spark in the opening bowling. Harbhajan after all the fiasco in the IPL could have dreamt of a better outing by pegging wickets at crucial junctures. Zaheer under Prasad's leadership is crucial in developing an all-round bowling team. At least now, I hope the relevant quarters have realized the importance of a bowling coach.

Indian batting excelled mainly on Dhoni's efforts. Although Yuvraj and Rohit showed an indifferent form, the short comings were well managed with Dhoni cleverly moving up and down the order. Rohit Sharma must realize soon that the expectation would simply double in his 2nd year of international cricket. Rohit's temperament being his greatest asset, should translate his talent into runs.

Dhoni taking a break from test matches to recoup, selectors pinning faith on youngsters and the seniors assuming responsibilities have all paid dividends.

Dhoni knocks Smith off top spot in Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings

Dubai, 30 August 2008

Flintoff takes over as number one all-rounder; Pietersen jumps to seventh place; Broad achieves career-best fourth position in bowlers’ list while Zaheer Khan becomes highest-ranked Indian bowler in 14th place

India ’s captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has knocked his South African counterpart Graeme Smith off top spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen after a good series against Sri Lanka which concluded in Colombo on Friday.

The 27-year-old from Bihar was the leading run-scorer in the five-match series with 193 runs that made sure his side clinched its first-ever ODI series in Sri Lanka and in the process displaced Smith at the top of the rankings.

Dhoni, who won the player-of-the-series award, was on top of the batting list for a week in April 2006 and is the first Indian batsman to head the batting chart since Sachin Tendulkar following the tri-series in Australia in March earlier this year.

Tendulkar, however, has dropped three places to ninth in the latest rankings after missing the series in Sri Lanka because of elbow injury. A player loses one per cent of his rating for missing every match.

Yuvraj Singh is the third Indian batsmen in the top 20 but the left-hander has dropped three places after scoring just 72 runs in the series and shares 18th position with England ’s Ian Bell who has jumped seven places after a series of good performances in the first three ODIs against South Africa so far.

Besides Dhoni, Suresh Raina is the only other India batsman to improve his batting ranking. The 21-year-old left-handed batsman scored 157 runs in the series and was rewarded by rising 18 places to 35th position.

Virender Sehwag, who missed the ODI series due to an ankle injury, stays in 29th place but his opening partner Gautam Gambhir has dropped six places to 28th after scoring just 36 runs in the series.

Sri Lanka’s highest ranked batsman remains Kumar Sangakkara who is in 15th position after dropping two places while Sanath Jayasuriya is in 17th place after rising one position. Captain Mahela Jayawardena has climbed two places to 24th position.

England captain Kevin Pietersen has jumped five places to seventh position after knocks of 90 not out and one against South Africa . The Hampshire batsman can leapfrog Pakistan ’s Mohammad Yousuf and Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies if he produces a couple more good knocks in the last two ODIs.

South Africa ’s AB Villiers has dropped out of the top 10 after disappointing performances in the series so far. The 24-year-old from Pretoria has slipped six places to 14th position while Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis have also lost ground.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has become his country’s highest ranked bowler in 14th place. The 29-year-old left-armer took nine wickets in the series and has stormed into the top 20 after jumping eight places.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh improved his ranking by six places and now sits in 23rd position.

Muttiah Muralidaran and Chaminda Vaas have dropped in the bowlers’ rankings but Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis have made significant upwards movements. Kulasekara has jumped 10 places to 24th after a series haul of 11 wickets while Mendis has rocketed 25 places to 48th position after finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets.

England ’s Stuart Broad has achieved his career-best ranking of fourth after figures of 1-61, 5-23 and 0-28 and has third place firmly within his sights.

Broad’s team-mate Andrew Flintoff has struck gold in the latest rankings. The Lancastrian has surged to the top of Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders after jumping six places.

The 30-year-old achieved the feat after climbing 10 places to 38th in the batting list and lifting four places to 13th position in the bowling chart. In the three ODIs so far, Flintoff has scored 156 runs and taken seven wickets.

England leapfrogs India and Pakistan into fourth place in Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table

Dubai, 29 August 2008

Kevin Pietersen’s side can go second if it wins the remaining two ODIs against South Africa

India has dropped to fifth place in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table despite winning the series against Sri Lanka 3-2 in Colombo on Friday but England has jumped to fourth place and has second position within touching distance after making it three out of three against South Africa in London .

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side had started in fourth place on 112 ratings points and finished the series in fifth place at 113. In contrast, Sri Lanka gained one ratings point after starting on 105.

India’s defeat by 112 runs by the Duckworth-Lewis Method in the fifth and final ODI against Sri Lanka did not cost it any place in the championship table after England comfortably won its third match of the five-match series by 126 runs at The Oval.

But the defeat cost India two ratings points while it earned Sri Lanka one ratings point. Had India won the series 4-1, it would have risen to 115 ratings points as compared to Sri Lanka ’s 104.

However, all eyes are now set on Kevin Pietersen’s side which is on course to complete a series sweep against South Africa . And if England manages to achieve that result, it would jump to second place on 118 ratings points while South Africa would be on equal points with New Zealand but behind the Black Caps when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

However, if England wins the series 4-1 it will sit just behind India by a fraction of a point. In that case, South Africa will retain second place on the table but will have slipped to 119 points after starting the series on 128.

If South Africa manages to win the last two ODIs, it will retain its second place in the table but the three defeats already suffered will drop it to 123 ratings points while England will jump to 111 points and fifth place.

Meanwhile, Australia and Bangladesh go head to head in the three-match ODI series in Darwin from Saturday.

Australia is 84 rating points ahead of ninth-placed Bangladesh and that gap means it is expected to win the series comfortably. If it fails to do so then its rating will suffer and it will lose three points even if it secures a 2-1 success. That result would mean a three-point gain for Bangladesh .

However, if Australia wins the series 3-0, it will gain one ratings point while Bangladesh will also drop one ratings point.

In-form England aims to maintain superiority over India ’s women in a five-match ODI series starting from Saturday

Dubai , 29 August 2008

Claire Taylor and Mitahli Raj on the verge of entering the exclusive 100-ODI club

India’s women cricketers launch their preparations for next year’s ICC Women’s World Cup 2009 in Australia when they go head to head against an in-form England side in the five-match ODI series in Bath, England from Saturday.

England is unbeaten this season having defeated the West Indies 1-0 in a two-match ODI series and South Africa 4-0 in a five-match ODI series. In contrast, India ’s last outing was in April and May this year in Sri Lanka where it won its fourth successive Asia Cup title.

The series becomes even more significant considering the fact that the two teams, along with Sri Lanka and Pakistan , are in Group B of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2009 to be staged in Sydney from 7 to 22 March. Group A is made up of defending champion Australia , New Zealand , West Indies and South Africa .

Second seed India and fourth seed England are favourites to go through to the Super Six from Group B along with either Sri Lanka or Pakistan . The top two teams from the Super Six stage will qualify for the final while the remaining four teams will go into the play-offs.

Besides England and India , the other six participants from the ICC Women’s World Cup 2009 will also figure in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 which will be staged alongside the men’s tournament in England next June.

While both the teams will be keeping an eye on their preparations for next year’s tournament, Charlotte Edwards’ girls will be aiming to maintain their superiority over Mithali Raj’s side.

England has won five of the last seven ODIs against India , including a 4-0 win the last time these two sides met in an ODI series on English soil. India twice defeated England in the preliminary round matches of a quadrangular s eries in 2007 in Chennai before England won the third/fourth-place play-off.

Fast bowler Isa Guha, who has taken 10 wickets in four ODIs this season, says every match England plays in a lead up to the ICC Women’s World Cup will help it gain confidence as it tries to finalise its best side ahead of the competition..

“We really believe as a team now that we can go out to the World Cup and win it,” said England ’s Guha.

“We are taking it every step at a time, taking each game as it comes. We just want to make sure we win every game of cricket. It’s about preparation for the World Cup and obviously we want to keep putting in good performances.

“With the coach and captain looking at different combinations of players in the side, your place in the side is never really guaranteed. Every player is hungry for success,” said the 23-year-old who has played seven Tests, 54 ODIs and seven Twenty20 Internationals.

Guha, who took 5-14 against the West Indies earlier this season, is also excited at the challenge of taking on a Mithali Raj-inspired India . “I am really looking forward to the upcoming series. I am interested to see how far India has come since we last played – we have certainly moved on – and they are an equally strong side,” said Guha, who made her debut at the age of 17.

“Mithali is a very competitive cricketer. She leads from the front and she is an excellent timer of the ball. We want to bowl consistently to her and make sure she doesn’t get off to a good start,” said Guha.

England captain Edwards says India will be tough opposition: “ India will be tough opposition this summer and we know we have to be at the top of our game to beat them.

“It has some world-class players like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami and it will be a good challenge for us. We've got a strong squad, a great blend of youth and experience and we can't wait for this series to get started - it should be a really good series with some excellent cricket.”

Mithali, who is India’s one of the most celebrated women cricketers, will become the 12th female cricketer and second Indian after Anjum Chopra (105) to have played 100 or more ODIs, when she leads the team in the second ODI.

And the Indian skipper is very excited about the challenge of taking on a confident England team.

“It’s definitely going to be a challenge, especially as England is in form, but we are very optimistic and confident about our success,” said Raj.

“We’re not targeting any specific England players – as a team they seem to have done very well recently.

“We will be looking to get the top order out early on and get the batters out who have been getting lots of runs recently and put some pressure on the other players.”

Claire Taylor, who has played 97 matches for her country, will also join the exclusive 100-ODI club during the series, if she can recover from illness. She will be the fourth Englishwoman after Charlotte Edwards, Jane Smit and her namesake Clare Taylor to play in 100 or more ODIs.

LG ICC Awards 2008 set to take place in Dubai

Dubai , 28 August 2008

Media accreditation process now open for journalists wishing to attend

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that the fifth annual LG ICC Awards ceremony would take place in Dubai on 10 September.

The event was due to be staged in Lahore ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy but with that tournament being postponed, it will now go ahead in Dubai , where the ICC has its headquarters.

“It is of course unfortunate in the circumstances that we had to change venue because we were all looking forward to a great ICC Awards night in Pakistan ,” said ICC President David Morgan.

“But Dubai is a major player in the world of international cricket these days and it is good to be able to bring such a prestigious event to the home of the ICC,” he said.

“In fact, Dubai is, in many ways, the perfect venue for the ICC Awards. The city is centrally located for the global game and it is set to become a major cricketing hub in its own right. The ICC Global Cricket Academy is set to open early next year, as is the brand-new 25,000-seater cricket stadium at Dubai Sports City .”

This year’s LG ICC Awards includes eight individual prizes, including a new one for the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year.

It also features the selection of the Test and ODI Teams of the Year and the award to the side that has adhered most to the Spirit of Cricket.

The nominations for seven of the awards were made by a five-man ICC selection panel chaired by West Indies legend Clive Lloyd. The panel also includes former Australia captain Greg Chappell, recently retired South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock, former Sri Lanka opener Sidath Wettimuny and former Bangladesh batsman Athar Ali Khan. This panel will also select the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year.

The winners of these seven individual awards will be voted upon by a 25-person panel from around the world, made up of renowned former players, respected members of the media, and an elite umpire and elite match referee.

Meanwhile, the nominations for the Women’s Cricketer of the Year Award were decided after each of the world’s top 10 teams was given the opportunity to nominate two players. This award will be voted on by a separate 16-person voting academy featuring former players and other experts on the women’s game.

The Spirit of Cricket Award will be voted on by all the international captains as well as all members of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.

This year sees the introduction of a new award, the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year Award, which will mark an outstanding individual effort in this newest format of the international game.

Also, the Associate ODI Player of the Year Award has been upgraded to the Associate Player of the Year Award and serves to recognise and reward the efforts in ODIs and other international matches of the outstanding cricketer from the six countries outside the ICC Full Members, namely Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands and Scotland.

Based on the 12 months between 9 August 2007 and 12 August 2008, the LG ICC Awards 2008 – presented in association with FICA – will take into account performances by players and officials in a remarkable period for the game. That period includes the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 2007 in South Africa .

The LG ICC Awards ceremony is now in its fifth year and this will be the first time it has been staged in Dubai . Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006) and Johannesburg (2007).

“The LG ICC Awards are an opportunity to pay homage to the remarkable performances of the world’s top players,” said Mr Morgan.

“It is also a chance for lovers of the sport around the globe to reflect on some of the great cricketing feats they have witnessed over the previous 12 months. This will be the fifth time the awards have been handed out and yet again there are so many great performances to recall. I don’t envy the job facing the selectors and voting academy,” he said.

Dhoni is the best captain we have had in decades

Javagal Srinath

When a bunch of talented young men get together and play as a team, concentrating on the achievements of the whole rather than the parts, the good results are never far away. And if there is one thing Mahendra Singh Dhoni specializes in, it is in getting his boys to play as a cohesive unit. I would go so far as to say that Dhoni is the best Indian captain over the past 2-3 decades.

The calm that he brings to proceedings, irrespective of the tense situations, the ease with which he handles extreme pressure, be it while batting or leading the side, marks Dhoni out as someone special. That he leads by example makes it that much easier to demand big things of his mates.

However, a captain is always only as good as his team and a lot depends on how the team responds to their leader's call. Here the Indian team excelled, more so the bowlers. The batsmen may have slipped up in the last ten overs, losing wickets in a heap, and that, ordinarily, may have hit the confidence of the bowlers who would have been preparing for a score of at least 280. To their credit, the bowlers, led admirably by Zaheer Khan once again, didn't let that affect them.

One must remember that in Lanka, bowling is never easy. The conditions are sapping, the humidity killing. No wonder even the extremely fit Dhoni too struggled. Performing in such conditions, match after match at that, takes some doing and I take my hat off to Zaheer for his excellent showing. Ever since he's been back from the injury lay-off, he's got better and better. It must have helped that he took his time coming back and didn't rush things out of desperation.

It was not a huge score that they were defending but it didn't reflect that way as the bowlers came out charging. One cannot always expect tall scores to be put up – at any rate this series hasn't seen too many runs being scored – and any score needs to be defended. With that in mind, the bowlers came to the party.

I particularly liked the way Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel supported Zaheer right through the series and with Harbhajan back to his wicket-taking ways, the Sri Lankans didn't have any respite. That actually was the key to the series triumph, the regular taking of wickets, be it by the fast men or the spinners. There simply was no easy was out for the Lankan batsmen.

It was also good to see a couple of young Indian batsmen come good. Scoring runs in a dead rubber is one thing and doing so when the series is very much in the balance, as it was on Wednesday, is another. The contributions of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina must be seen in that light and not just by the weight of runs they made. Also anyone can plonk his foot and hammer the ball on flat tracks but contributing on pitches where there is something for the bowlers, calls for a fair amount of ability.

ECB working to ensure ticket availability for Associates at ICC WT20

Dubai, 28 August 2008

The England and Wales Cricket Board today confirmed it is working with the Dutch, Scottish and Irish cricket authorities to ensure that as many tickets as possible for the ICC World Twenty20 2009 (ICC WT20 2009) get to the fans of the three Associate teams.

Zimbabwe’s decision to step back from the tournament means certainty for organisers, teams and supporters with Scotland now included in next June’s 12-team event and Ireland and the Netherlands knowing which groups they will be placed in.

Because of that certainty, organisers are anticipating an increasing demand for tickets from the supporters of the three teams and are looking at ways of addressing it.

Tournament Director Steve Elworthy said: “With the final line-up for the ICC World Twenty20 now decided, all three Associate teams know where and when they will be playing.

“On that basis we are expecting an increasing demand for tickets from supporters of those countries and we are looking at ways of addressing that because we want to ensure as many people as possible following those teams get the chance to catch the action.

“We are working with both our ticketing partners and the cricket boards of Ireland, the Netherlands and Scotland to ensure we get this right and we will keep the public updated as the process continues,” he added.

Zimbabwe’s decision to step back means Ireland takes its place in Group A with India and Bangladesh, the Netherlands eases into Group B alongside England and Pakistan while Scotland takes a position in Group D with South Africa and New Zealand.

The inaugural ICC WT20 took place last September in South Africa. India won the event, beating Pakistan by five runs in the final in Johannesburg.

ICC President pays tribute to Sir Donald Bradman

Dubai, 27 August 2008

Centenary of Bradman’s birth

David Morgan: “His name is a by-word for brilliance; soccer has Pele, cricket has Bradman”

ICC President David Morgan today paid tribute to the life of Sir Donald Bradman on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

“No name in cricket conjures up such widespread awe and respect as that of Sir Donald Bradman,” said Mr Morgan.

“Even people with just a passing knowledge of the game or in countries where he never played will invariably recognise the name Bradman as a by-word for brilliance.

“That name says all that is best about the game and it is synonymous with cricket. Soccer has Pele and cricket has Bradman.

“Even now, 60 years after his final Test match and with time to put his achievements into context, his batting average of 99.94 still seems scarcely believable, especially when one compares it to those of the many other players to have graced the game at the highest level.

“This centenary offers us an opportunity to reflect upon the role the Don played in popularizing the game through his attacking style of batting.

“But he was a captain too, he looked to lead as he played, in a positive manner, and his 1948 side including the likes of Keith Miller, Neil Harvey, Arthur Morris and Ray Lindwall is rightly remembered as one of the greatest line-ups of all time.

“We should also remember the way he gave back to the game after he finished playing, as a selector and as an administrator with the Australian Cricket Board and the Imperial Cricket Conference.

“Sir Donald’s life was a lifetime of service to cricket and his legacy is that our strong sport continues to grow stronger.

“I am delighted Australia is leading the tributes to Sir Donald with its captain Ricky Ponting delivering the Bradman Oration in Sydney.

“Cricket is all about tradition and respecting previous generations and I am sure Ricky’s speech will do just that as well as being a fitting tribute to a truly great cricket person.”

Tests: 52
Runs: 6996
Hundreds: 29
Average: 99.94

First-class matches: 234

Great opportunity for Indians

Javagal Srinath

The Test results offered an unusual and complex portrait of a cricket team in a flux. This young One-day Indian team leading 2-1 in the ODI series is showing another picture. All in all it is very clear and obvious that when we watch different forms of the game we need to have a different perspective of the team.

In yesterday's comprehensive win one could see a growth in all departments. To be consistent in winning, that balance in bowling and batting is crucial. A team which has great batting line-up sans decent bowlers or vice versa will find it hard to be consistent in winning. In the last two Indian victories, we have noticed a collective good performance from all the members of the team than any individual brilliance.

Let me go through the performances of some of the players whose telling contribution is worth a mention. Praveen Kumar, the Haryana all rounder is already sharing the new ball. Pravin appears to be an intelligent cricketer who utilizes his potential to the fullest. With the new ball in his hand and an easy run up to the wicket makes him look very innocuous. The strength of Praveen is in the swing which he is able to achieve at will. Pravin's easy action might not enable him to bowl fast but allows having greater control on his line and length. His upright position at the delivery stride gives him that advantage from where he can swing either ways. I was quite impressed with the way he bowled to Jayasuriya moving the ball away giving hardly any room on the off-side. Pravin's ability to bowl with subtle variation at the depth makes Dhoni's task much easier.

Munaf preferred ahead Irfan shows the former new found interest in the game. Munaf keenly dispelling the myth that he always struggled in his later spells.

Harbhajan and Zaheer, the senior pros have lived up to their reputation.

Indian batting stuttered but never looked out of control. Impressive Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played to the team's requirement. Rohit who is struggling for runs walked in with a purpose. With Skipper Dhoni at the other end, his run a ball effort gave the team a decent score. Here again Rohit's attitude to look for runs to secure the team than to worry about his own runs was evident. Such approach helps build a stronger image of the player in the dressing room. In the end for a player to be chosen or to survive during a long loss of form, it's that image in the dressing room which comes to his rescue.

Srilanka heavily relying on veteran Jayasuriya and Sangakara were once again exposed. Indians have very well explored the chinks in the Srilankan side and exploited it well. It is a great opportunity for Indians to seal the series in the next game itself. If Srilanka were to win the next one, the advantage would rest with the host going into the finals.

ICC Board agrees to postpone ICC Champions Trophy

Dubai, 24 August 2008

The ICC Board today agreed unanimously to postpone the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Pakistan next month, until October 2009.

The agreement was reached during a telephone hook-up of ICC Directors.

It was further agreed that the Board would meet in September 2008 to discuss the details of the postponement.

Pakistan will retain the right to host the tournament but it was agreed that if other Members continued to express reservations over issues of safety and security then the ICC Board would have the right to decide about the tournament’s location.

ICC President David Morgan said: “There was complete support and sympathy for the Pakistan Cricket Board and the situation it finds itself in, which is not of its making.

“However, there was also a realisation that, under the current circumstances, some of the teams due to compete in the ICC Champions Trophy had reservations about touring there which could not be removed.

“In those circumstances it was considered prudent to postpone the event to October 2009, a time when we all hope conditions may be more acceptable for all the competing teams.

“It was agreed Pakistan would retain the right to host the event next year but that if, at a certain time, any Members still had reservations then the ICC’s Board would have the right to relocate the event.”

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: “Every one of our Members wishes to ensure the ICC Champions Trophy is a world-class event and the prospect of relocating it at short notice in order to make sure it was played this year would not allow that criterion to be fulfilled.

“Today’s agreement provides clarity for our Members and in September we will look to put in place a timeframe for arrangements ahead of the event taking place in 2009.”

The ICC Board consists of the Chairman or President from each of the 10 Full Members plus three Associate Member representatives. Also present at ICC Board meetings is the ICC President, who chairs proceedings, the ICC Chief Executive and the ICC Vice President. The ICC’s Principal Advisor, Inderjit Bindra, attends meeting at the request of the President and was present on Sunday’s call.

India will meet Host Sri Lanka in a crucial third match of series

Javagal Srinath

After two close matches at Dambulla , Now its Premadasa where India will meet Host Sri Lanka in a crucial third match of series.Beating Sri Lankan at home soil has always been tough. but it's been even harder in day-night matches, and especially those played the Premadasa. In the first half it will be a run feast game mainly controlled by the batsman but Spinners will hold the key in the second half of the game and it will be a tough job for those batting second. A good opening stand by either side may well close down the series.Winner of this match will get an advantage to win the series.

I have played lots of matches at Pemadasa.Tradationally the pitch begins low and slow in the second half, difficult to make strokes under lights.Spinners will have much more say in that situation. At that stage better option will be singles & doubles to move score-board, instead of trying for boundaries.

Ajantha Mendis has taken the world by surprise and he will definitely get some advantage. For Indian batsman, Mendis-Murali combination will be a real threat at Premadasa under flood lights. Mendis has a great variety of deliveries and has the advantage of leaving the batsman puzzled at the crease. He is getting all support from Murali and that's adds his confidence. Indian Batsmen should watch his wrist first and play accordingly.Dhoni, Newcomer Badrinath and Virat proved in the last match that Mendis is playable. With a spin attack comprising Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, best option for Indian batsmen to get their eye in against the medium-pacers.Captain M.S.Dhoni & his deputy Yuvraj must play with responsibility in the middle and Dhoni should play the anchoring role. As I have mentioned that a good opening needed in this kind of wicket.Same time India need couple of good partnership in the middle-order.They must improve running beteein the wicket and good communications between the batsman to make a successful partnership. It's about time the Gambhirs', Raina's gets amongst the runs.I have mentioned before that match winning knock on the first outing should do a lot of good to Badri's confidence, but this is just a beginning and he has a long way to go.He must show consistency in his batting.

Knowing the advantage bowlers hold on this wicket, With inform Zaheer, Munaf-Bhajji should strike early in Sri Lankan innings.India need early exit of Jayasurya,Sangakara & Mahela as they did in the previous match.

GRIPPING OF TABLE TENNIS RACKET

D. Ajay

There is no concrete rule regarding the gripping or holding a table tennis racket in a game or a match by the INTERNATIONAL TABLE TENNIS FEDERATION. Only RACKET HAND and FREE HAND have been mentioned in the ITTF rule. RACKET HAND means the hand on which the racket is held and the FREE HAND means the hand on which racket is not held i.e. free. On the basis of these, a player is allowed to use only one hand for holding the racket on his own way and the player will not be allowed to use both the hand for holding or gripping the racket and the player may be allowed to change his hand from left to right & vice-versa.

But the event cultivators observed few types of gripping are very much convenient to the players for achieving maximum performance. For this reason players are commonly using the following types of grips:

a) PEN HOLD
The style of gripping the racket by the player in this method is similar to the way of holding the pen or pencil etc. The Chinese, Japanese and Korean players are commonly using this style. Normally one side of the racket is being used in this style.
But nowadays some of the players of the above countries are using both the side of the racket with a new technique of pen hold gripping.

b) SHAKE HAND
Similarly the shake hand grip means the style of gripping the racket by the player like to the way one makes hand shake with other. Normally Indian players are using this style.

c) SEEMILLER GRIP
But recently a new style has been successfully introduced which is modified type of shake hand grip. Here thumb and fore finger form a ‘V’ shape on the back hand side of the racket. This style of grip is known as ‘Seemiller Grip’ in the name of successful user Danny Seemiller of United States.

A low scoring game always turns out to be a tricky one

Javagal Srinath

A low scoring game always turns out to be a tricky one. India losing the 5th wicket half way through the chase provided good testing grounds for the batsmen to come. Before we speak about Badrinath's debut, let us understand the mind set of the young Badri when he didn't make it into the team in the first cut.

Just after the team for the Srilankan ODI was declared, I saw Badrinath's interview in one of the news Channel. He said he felt miserable and didn't know what to say or how to accept his non-inclusion. One could make out Badri's deep sense of disappointment in his tone. I suppose there are many players who wait anxiously for the selection day to find out if their names figure in the list. These kind of restless moments plays a pivotal role in shaping up a cricketers psyche. Many players, first lose confidence in the system and gradually lose confidence in themselves. Only a few remain resolute and motivated to stay in contention.

Coming back to Badri, perhaps he was one of the few who didn't lose heart upon not being considered often. May be the secret of Badri's motivation could be Skipper Dhoni's trust in him. A Captains' confidence in a player is very important in groom one's career at the international level. Smiling Badri didn't look one bit nervous as he walked into a very difficult situation. Dhoni' presence seemed to be a boon as both of them started the partnership with rotating singles. Here again the duo's stint for Chennai Super's came in handy to establish themselves quickly. Badri handled both Murali and mysterious Mendis with aplomb. The best parts of the partnership were the running between the wickets and the communication. For a debutant, learning can only happen at the center.

A match winning knock on the first outing should do a lot of good to Badri's confidence, but this is just a beginning and he has a long way to go.

Dhambola has always offered more to the bowlers than the batsmen. Knowing the advantage bowlers hold on this wicket, it would have been sad if the bowlers had let go such an opportunity. Indian spearhead Zaheer Khan made his efforts count by adhering to the very elements of fast bowling. Early exit of Sangakara and Jayasuriya creates a near vacuum in their batting line up. Barring skipper Mahela, the patience of other Lankan batsmen appears circumspect.

Indians must be on their toes as the rest of the games are played at Premadasa, a venue which suits SL team more. It's about time the Gambhirs', Rohit Sharma's and Raina's gets amongst the runs. All I can predict from here, is a run feast game mainly controlled by the batsmen.

South Africa aims for summit of Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table

Dubai, 21 August 2008

South Africa will aim to return to the summit of the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table when it goes head-to-head with England in a five-match ODI series starting at Leeds on Friday.

South Africa is currently two ratings points behind Australia on 128 but will go three points clear if it sweeps the series 5-0. A 4-1 win will put it on 130 ratings points but ahead of Australia when those ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

South Africa is 22 rating points ahead of sixth-placed England and that gap means it is expected to win the series comfortably. If it fails to do so then its rating will suffer and it will lose two points if it secures only a 3-2 success. A loss by the same margin will see Graeme Smith’s side slide to 122 points.

South Africa and England ’s post-series positions in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table are dependent on not only their own form in the series but also the result of the Sri Lanka – India clash. That five-match series is currently level at 1-1 and concludes on 29 August.

A 5-0 series loss for Kevin Pietersen’s side will drop it to 102 ratings points and a 4-1 defeat will cost it one ratings point but a 3-2 defeat, a creditable result given the large gap between the sides, will actually earn it three points, lifting it to 109.

A victory by a 5-0 margin will put England on 118 ratings points and drop the Proteas to 116 ratings points while a 4-1 series result will lift England to 115 and drop South Africa to 119.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen, Smith holds the top slot and will be looking to open the gap from second-placed India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is currently involved in the ODI series in Sri Lanka .

Besides Smith , South Africa has AB de Villiers (8th), Herschelle Gibbs (11th) and Jacques Kallis (17th) are in the top 20 while Pietersen is the highest ranked England batsman in 12th position.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, Australia ’s Nathan Bracken holds the top placing but South Africa ’s fifth-placed Andre Nel has a chance to leapfrog the Sri Lanka duo of Muttiah Muralidaran and Chaminda Vaas, depending how the trio perform over the coming days.

Makhaya Ntini currently sits in 14th place and will be targeting an upward movement to back his fifth place in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers.

Like South Africa , England also boasts two players in the top 20 with fast bowler Stuart Broad as the highest ranked bowler in a career-high 13th place which he achieved against Scotland at Edinburgh earlier this week.

Andrew Flintoff is the other bowler in top 20 in 17th spot.

England ’s James Anderson is 22nd while South Africa ’s Dale Steyn has room for upward movement as he is currently 121st.

Kallis has a good chance to surge to the top of Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders as he has Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and New Zealand ’s Jacob Oram firmly within his sights.

Teleconferences of task team and ICC Board called to discuss ICC Champions Trophy

Dubai, 20 August 2008

A meeting took place on Wednesday at the ICC’s offices in Dubai to discuss the ICC Champions Trophy, due to be held next month in Pakistan.

The meeting, scheduled in the wake of task team representatives visiting Pakistan last week, was attended by ICC President David Morgan, Vice President Sharad Pawar and Haroon Lorgat, the Chief Executive.

The meeting discussed feedback from task team briefings with stakeholders from England, Australia and New Zealand.

As a result of that feedback, Wednesday’s meeting agreed that, subject to confirmation from the relevant participants, teleconferences would be called of the task team and the ICC Board.

It is anticipated the task team hook-up will take place on Friday 22 August and the ICC Board hook-up will be held on Sunday 24 August. Timings are to be confirmed.

Prior to those hook-ups, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat will meet with Cricket South Africa officials to brief them on the safety and security measures in place for the tournament.

Wednesday’s meeting involving Messrs Morgan, Pawar and Lorgat was also attended by Shafqat Nahgmi, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Chief Operating Officer.

The task team, constituted by an ICC Board hook-up of 24 July, has two functions:

To ensure the effective implementation of the recommendations of the ICC’s independent security advisors; and

Liaise with various stakeholders, including embassies within Pakistan and other Governments, on an ongoing basis to ensure effective communication and the management of any concerns that may exist.

The task team includes not only Messrs Morgan, Pawar and Lorgat but also representatives of the ICC’s official broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).

Munaf Patel fined for breach of ICC Code of Conduct

Dubai, 20 August 2008

India fast bowler Munaf Patel has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during his country’s ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on Wednesday.

Munaf was found guilty of a Level 2 offence by Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees at a hearing following the conclusion of the match won by India by three wickets.

Munaf was found to have breached clause 2.8 of the Code which refers to “using language that is obscene, offensive or of a seriously insulting nature to another player, umpire, referee, team official or spectator.”

The incident related to remarks made by the player to umpire Gamini Silva after the official turned down an lbw appeal.

During the course of the hearing Munaf pleaded not guilty to the charge but did admit to speaking aggressively to the umpire.

Commenting on the decision, Mr Broad said: “I accept that in international cricket there is a lot of passion but that does not excuse players talking back to umpires in an aggressive manner, as happened in this case.

“That is unacceptable and I hope this decision and the fine imposed demonstrates that fact.”

The charge was laid by the four umpires on duty, Gamini Silva and Billy Doctrove, third official Tyron Wijewardena and fourth umpire RD Kottahachchi. The hearing was attended by Silva, Doctrove and Wijewardena, the player, India team manager Sanjay Desai and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The punishment for a Level 2 offence can range from a fine of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee up to a full match fee and/or a ban of one Test or two ODIs.

A player found guilty of a Level 2, 3 or 4 offence has a right of appeal. Such an appeal must be lodged in writing with the ICC’s legal counsel within 24 hours of the player receiving the sanction. Any player who lodges an appeal is free to play pending that hearing.

Zimbabwe Cricket confirms non-participation in ICC WT20 2009

Dubai, 20 August 2008

Zimbabwe Cricket today confirmed its decision not to participate in the ICC World Twenty20 2009.

The decision, taken as a one-off, was reached during a meeting between ZC officials and ICC President David Morgan, Vice President Sharad Pawar and Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat in Dubai on Wednesday.

ZC officials had previously indicated the country’s willingness to step back from the ICC WT20 2009 during the ICC’s annual conference week in Dubai in June/July, pending agreement by its Board.

ZC arrived at the decision after recognizing the UK Government would be unlikely to issue visas for the team for the ICC WT20 2009, given it had already cancelled the bilateral series between England and Zimbabwe set to take place earlier in the year.

The decision was made with a view to the following:

A recognition of the logistical challenges of putting on an event of the size of the ICC WT20;
the need to create certainty around the event; and
the need to offer Scotland, the side set to step up in Zimbabwe’s place, adequate preparation time ahead of the tournament.

ICC President David Morgan said: “We are grateful to Zimbabwe Cricket for confirming the decision taken by its officials during annual conference week.

“This allows the ICC the opportunity to plan with certainty the ICC World Twenty20 2009, as well as giving Scotland, the side set to step up in Zimbabwe’s place, plenty of preparation time ahead of the tournament.”

The ZC delegation that met with ICC officials in Dubai on Wednesday was made up of ZC Chairman Peter Chingoka, Tavengwa Mukuhlani, ZC’s vice chairman, and the chairman of the legal and constitutional committee Wilson Manase.

Indian batsmen to battle it out at the center

Javagal Srinath

The first ODI defeat in SL should be seen more in the positive light than anything else. This young Indian brigade is operating in a learning mode. It's important that the team's management, mainly the seniors, explain the nuances of international cricket to the new comers. In any youngster's early part of his international cricket, the messages coming from the lost games go a long way in making his career. Winning does bring confidence and conviction but losing could be confusing. In defeats, it's easy to allow bad habits to creep into one's practices. The senior's reactions, behavior and their approach towards the juniors are sacred. The immediate reaction of the Captain in the aftermath of the defeat has a huge bearing in shaping rookies career. I am sure even an experienced campaigner has his own cup of woes when things are not going well. But the kind of body language and understanding that a senior demonstrates in the post lost-match scenario, will have high influence on the rookies. All youngsters are naturally observant; they emulate and sync the mannerism of their idols. As a matter of fact, youngster's growth is a true reflection of the senior in the side.

Dhoni and Gary should articulate the defeats and wins in the right context. At times learning's are more when losing to a good side. The Indian think thank including the selectors have done a good job in blooding few youngsters straight away. The only worrying part would be the result which should not given too much weight age at this point in time.

Looking into the upbeat Srilankan camp, Ajantha Mendis is turning out to a star on every outing. Not many bowlers have shown such consistency in both forms of the game. Mendis is a rare phenomenon. Mendis is neither a leg spinner nor an off spinner but he is both. A true champion bowler from the word goes. Thanks to the Srilankan cricket systems which did not meddle with his action to comply with the copy book coaching manuals. The way he troubled the best four Indian batsmen during the Test series, has certainly lent weight and depth to this new style of bowling. Critics would want to see more of Mendis on all kind of wickets to endorse the new art of bowling. But the coaches' worldwide watching Mendis fingers roll, are under pressure to learn and impart this new skill.

With Virat and Rohit coming into the playing 11, pressure would be on Dhoni and Yuvraj. It would be imperative that these two seniors to steer the innings till the end. Mendis variations with accuracy have made him deadly. But what is even more deadlier is the other bowlers building up pressure constantly at the Indian batsmen.

Dambulla wicket has always encouraged both fast bowlers as well as the spinners. So the onus is on the Indian batsmen to battle it out at the center.

Kenya back on track in ICC Intercontinental Cup

Dubai, 19 August 2008

Thrashing of Netherlands lifts it to top of table BUT it could still miss out on finals spot

Kenya’s two-day innings win over the Netherlands in the ICC Intercontinental Cup clash in Amstelveen has lifted the African side to the top of the table with the finish line to the group stage just around the corner.

But Kenya is still not guaranteed a place in the finals with Ireland and Namibia capable of denying it.

And with three group matches remaining, any one of that trio of sides could still miss out.

The Irish, two-time defending champions, can book its berth with back-to-back wins against Namibia and Steve Tikolo’s men while Namibia, long-time table-toppers following five successive wins, will make it with a victory over cellar-dwellers Bermuda.

So, there are plenty of hurdles to get over before Kenya can start planning for the final but at least it can reflect on a great return to form in the Netherlands, the innings and six-run win contrasting with a bitterly disappointing ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Belfast.

The Africans, ICC Cricket World Cup semi-finalists in 2003, were completely outshone in that six-team event, finishing fourth behind joint winners Ireland and the Netherlands and third-placed Scotland.

The Netherlands actually beat Kenya by 19 runs in the opening match of the ICC WT20 Qualifier but with six players from that encounter – Darron Reekers, Ryan ten Doeschate, Daan van Bunge, Mudassar Bukhari, Henk-Jan Mol and Jeroen Smits – missing in Amstelveen, Kenya had little trouble in exacting revenge.

Indeed, two Dutch batsmen – opener Rifaiz Bakas (0 and 16) and Lesley Stokkers (6 and 23) – made their first-class debuts in this latest match.

The Netherlands was still in the match late on the first day when, having been bowled out for just 126, it fought back to reduce Kenya to 119-5.

However, with Maurice Ouma managing the lower-order’s resistance, the visitors were able to engineer a first innings lead of 127, which proved more than enough in the circumstances.

Ouma’s 114, including 10 fours and six sixes, was crucial in seeing the last five wickets in his side’s innings add 134 despite no-one among the bottom four in the batting list reaching double figures.

Peter Ongondo (5-13) then cut a swathe through the Netherlands’ top-order and once it was reduced to 48-5 then there was no way back for the home side.

Ongondo finished with the remarkable match figures of 24-10-27-7, another indication of his class, something also reflected in his presence in the top 20 of the Reliance Mobile ODI Player Rankings.

So, what of any crumbs of comfort for the Dutch? Aste Buurman, who stepped in as wicketkeeper in the absence of Smits, made a battling 41 in the second innings while spinner Pieter Seelaar, so impressive in the ICC WT20 Qualifier, bowled beautifully to capture 5-57.

The Netherlands’s campaign is now over, with three wins and four losses from its seven matches and it occupies fifth spot, a position it will retain whatever the results of the three remaining group matches.

ICC Intercontinental Cup table (as of 19 August)

P W L D A Pts
Kenya 6 4 1 0 1 96
Namibia 5 5 0 0 0 82
Scotland 7 3 1 2 1 82

Netherlands 7 3 4 0 0 48
UAE 7 1 5 1 0 29
Canada 7 1 5 1 0 29
Bermuda 6 1 5 0 0 26

Key:
Six points for first innings lead
14 points for a win (so, maximum of 20 points per match) (W)
Three points for a draw (D)
10 points for an abandoned match (A)
Top two sides qualify for the final at a venue to be confirmed

Remaining matches:

3 – 6 September – Bermuda v Namibia
5 – 8 October – Namibia v Ireland
12 – 15 October – Kenya v Ireland
Final - TBC

The ICC Intercontinental Cup has quickly grown in stature and profile since its inception four years ago and now the ICC’s premier first-class tournament is an integral part of the Associate Members’ cricket schedule.

Having previously been designed around a two-group, three-day format, the event has evolved into an eight-team, round-robin and truly global tournament featuring four-day cricket which gives those teams who do not play Test cricket the chance to experience the longer form of the game.

Scotland won the first ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004, beating Canada in the final, while Ireland has been victorious in both events since then, beating Kenya in the 2005 decider and Canada in the 2006-07 event.

The final of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2007-08 will take place in November 2008 at a venue yet to be confirmed.

It is difficult to defend such low score

Anshuman Gaekwad

The downfall continues.Once Again India put up a pathetic batting display and lost the match without a fight in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka at Dambulla. No signs of omprovement ,no fighting spirits. It seems that top order almost forgot the basics of the game. And again it was Sri Lankan Spin due Muralitharan & Ajantha Mendis , who continued to torment the Indians.
It was a batting friendly wicket at Dambulla but Indian batsmen wasted opportunity to post a big total after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat first on winning the toss. The way Gautam Gambhir,Raina & Rohit Sharma got out , its really shocking.Even Dhoni's Deputy Yuvraj Singh dismissed so cheaply after getting runs in practice match couple of days back.shewag's absence was a big blow for Indian team, because only he was in form and capable of guiding the team in absence of Sachin Tendulkar. But that does'nt mean the other batsman will surrender so cheaply.
The way our batsman dismissed , Margin of defeat , there can be no excuse.I think serious introspection needed immediately if Indian Cricket want to get back their pride in the remaining matches of this series.Team management took a wrong decision by sending debutant Virat Kohli to open the innings. It was difficult for New Comer Kohli to face both the pressure – Debut & Opening the innings. It's really surprising that Indian team playing in this series without any third specialist opener. In this situation Irfan Pathan was the right option for team management who has performed same role in past.
India innings got off to a bad start. Indian innings looked in deep trouble. In that situation Dhoni, Yuvraj, Raina and others also failed to apply themselves.Mendis is still difficult to read but how can you explain those cheap dismissals! At least couple of batsman gifted their wickets to Sri Lnakan bowlers.Team management should start serious thinking immediately after this match if they want to fight back in the seirous and avoid greater humiliation.
In a batting friendly wicket It was difficult to defend such low score. When batters are letting our team down what bowlers can do?Now Indians must improve in all department.Need disciplined performance- have to bat, bowl & field exceptionally well in the remaining matches. If they perform according to their strength I am sure Dhoni & Co is capable to beat this Sri Lankan team even when they are playing in their home soil.

Specifically to mention a few of those are its inaccessibility, backwardness and extremist related violence. Admitting the problems therein, it may also be claimed that an all out human process so as to turn away all those oddities has begun.

Beyond al these odds people of Tripura have carried the legacy of the age old heritage of mutual co-existence between the tribal and non-tribal populace. Though this glorious aspect so not broadly discussed by the mainland intelligentsia, it however, interests scholars and research fellows in the field of sociology. In fact, we need exposure of our land and people; this ancient land has possessed so many ingredients to be proud of about which outside people have also been getting interested gradually.

Tripura is bestowed with a bonanza of bewildering variety of landscapes, rich distribution of flora and fauna. The province has also preserved archaeological treasures of past civilization as well as ancient religious sanctorum of the Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim. It offers a pleasant combination of natural beauty and culture. Who does not intend to savoir the aesthetics of nature and life? Yes, natural life and lively nature – both and their ingredients, as a whole, have made this ancient land of mysterious past an ideal haunt for tourists in general.

Historical base of this mixed populated state is that is was consolidated as a Kingdom by a tribal King of Indo-Mongoloid origin and who later assumed the dynastic title of Manikya. A number of Tripura Kings were generous and enlightened who invited thousands of Bengali population of varied working groups from the erstwhile plain Tipperah and East Pakistan to settle in Tripura for the welfare of tribal people under their rule. Over the passage of time, a large chunk of influx of Bengali refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan had been provided shelter, food, clothes and even land with a rare kind of generosity of the king and people.it os motable that one of the enlightened Manikya rulers Maharaja Birchandra Manikya Bahadur was a friend of Novel laureate Rabindranath Tagore who visited Agartala at the invitation of the former. Tagore immortalized Tripura on his novel ‘Rajarshi’ and ‘Visharjan’ based on legends of the Tripura Kings.

It is also fascination to charge with ethnic diversity of the state. Each tribal community has its own language and distinctive from of cultural expression, such as music and dances. Tripuris have the Goria dance, the Reangs have the Hozagiri and the Chakmas have Bijhu dance. They have their own musical instruments like Sumui, Khamb and Labang which are made of bamboo. On the other hand, in parallel dimension the non-tribal populace practice Rabindra Sangeet and dance, Gnjan dance, Dhamail, Jari-Sari and Murshidi-Marfiti. As a whole the land and its people unveil a cultural confluence.

The timing of assuming Captaincy for the first time is critical in one's leadership

Javagal Srinath

The timing of assuming Captaincy for the first time is critical in one's leadership. The circumstances and the reasons for which the player is made Captain remain equally important .Somehow the rationale behind the change in Captaincy in Indian cricket team's leadership space, is far from ideal. I can recall my earlier cricketing days when K srikkant lost his captaincy to Azharuddin for not participating in the Duleep trophy games. Subsequently Azhar was forced to step down to crown a very young and inexperienced Sachin Tendulkar. It was a game of musical chair in 2000 when Sachin decided to quit captaincy leaving the selectors to pick Saurav among few equals. Rahul was made the captain when time-barred Saurav was still desirous to continue. And now when we see Anil leading the test side, it appears that Captaincy has come to him too late in his career.

Let's take a look at some better value practice in matured cricketing surroundings. Recently, the England Skipper Micheal Vaughan emotionally bid adieu to make way for young Kevin Peterson. Paul Collingwood did a similar act in relinquishing ODI leadership. Nasir Hussien and Atherton did quit captaincy on their own terms. In many cases the incumbent captain have named or even suggested their successors. From Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh to Ricky Pointing have followed dignified transitions in Australia. The practices in England and Australia are such that the new Captain assumes roles in a seemingly conducive team environment. I sometimes wonder why such acts of value progression are all that difficult for our captains to follow.

Back to Indian cricket. It appears that the selectors have stumbled upon Mahendra Singh Dhoni to don on him the mantle of leadership. Fortunately, Dhoni's captaincy has not only come at the right time but also for all the right reasons. To be true to his leadership characteristic, he stood up to take a much needed break for the test series in Srilanka. Thus opening a fierce debate on whether it was the right decision or not. Infact that decision needs to be applauded and set as precedence for other players to follow. Dhoni's decision shows self-confidence and conviction in his ability to come back. More over, this Jharkand man is secured and honest with the game. This act of rarity is seldom practiced by Indian greats.

Dhoni keeps his cool, holds his calm, demonstrates grace under pressure and shows poise under all situations. His cogent analysis of the game and brutally honest remarks that avoid obvious diplomacy brings life into media briefing. The esoteric knowledge of captaincy has come naturally to him. His phenomenal success in the T20 World cup has made him a tonic figure on the world stage. I only hope that Dhoni gets the right support from all corners of the game.

Looking into the Srilankan series ahead, the selectors along with the dynamic captain have chosen the best side. Robin Utapah was missing out on one too many games inspite of being in the team which has now translated into him being dropped from the team itself. With Raina, Badri and Yusuf around Robin's string of low scores have worked against him. Its time he realizes the gravity of international cricket.

Kenya’s bowlers on top as Netherlands struggles on day one

Dubai , 16 August 2008

Kenya ’s Thomas Odoyo and Hiren Varaiya reduced the Netherlands to 126 all out inside 43 overs on day one of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match at Amstelveen on Saturday, giving them the perfect start in what is a must-win game for the Africans.

Seamer Odoyo and left-arm spinner Varaiya took three wickets each as the Netherlands crumbled after losing the toss and being asked to make first use of the track by Kenya captain Steve Tikolo.

This is a severely weakened Dutch side thanks to work commitments, injury and other reasons with Nick Statham and Somesh Kohli being drafted into the squad as replacements and Rifaiz Bakas and Lesley Stokkers winning first-class debuts.

The Netherlands batsmen struggled to cope with the pace and accuracy of Odoyo and Peter Ongondo early on as Kenya made good use of the conditions. Indeed, the final total could have been worse as the Netherlands ’ disappointing start left it reeling on 33-5 and then 49-6. That it got to 126 at all represented a good effort by the Netherlands lower order.

Statham ended up top scoring for the home side with 29 and the only other innings of note were courtesy of Edgar Schiferli (27) and Mohammed Kashif (24 not out).

By the close, Kenya had progressed to 179-6 a first-innings lead of 53. Maurice Ouma is still there unbeaten on 56 and will be keen to make the Netherlands suffer as he attempts to build a big lead for his side when play resumes on day two.

ICC Intercontinental Cup (stumps – day one)
At Amstelveen
Toss: Kenya
Netherlands (first innings) 126 all out, 43.2 overs (Nick Statham 29, Edgar Schiferli 27, Mohammad Kashif (24 not out); Thomas Odoyo 3-16, Hiren Varaiya 3-53)
Kenya (first innings) 179-6, 50 overs (Maurice Ouma 56 not out)
Kenya leads by 53 runs

Kenya looks to set up showdown with Ireland by beating the Dutch

Dubai , 14 August 2008

On Saturday, Kenya begins its final countdown towards what would be its first ICC Intercontinental Cup title when it takes on the Netherlands at Amstelveen .

Steve Tikolo’s side is currently lying in third place on the table, just six points behind Namibia and Scotland . But with two games in hand over the Scots, Kenya will feel a place in the final is within its grasp.

“We know it’s in our own hands,” said captain Tikolo. “If we win in Amstelveen and then beat Ireland back home in October, we will be through to the final.

“It would mean a lot to us because even though we have been close in the past, we have never won this competition,” he said.

Indeed, when Kenya got to the final in 2005 at the Wanderers Club in Windhoek, Namibia, it was Ireland that beat it so there will be a certain amount of pay-back due from that nasty experience.

“We are not looking ahead to that game yet. First of all, we must beat the Netherlands . I know that Peter (Borren) and his guys will be confident after getting through to the ICC World Twenty20 at the qualifying tournament in Belfast last week but the four-day game is a different prospect.

“They definitely have some good players. Tom de Grooth has been playing well and Edgar Schiferli and Mohamed Kashif are always dangerous but the Netherlands are out of the running in this competition whereas we still have everything to play for,” said the veteran Tikolo.

“We have a pretty strong side over for this and we’re determined not the let this opportunity slip from our grasp.”

And to encourage Tikolo further, the Netherlands team is missing some key players for this game, including Ryan ten Doeschate, Bas Zuiderent and Alex Kervezee so the pressure will really be on the home side.

With unsettled weather forecast for the Netherlands over the coming days, Tikolo will want to make sure the rain that prevented him and his team from even taking the field in Glasgow last week does not stop them from securing all 20 points this week.

It looks as though the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2007-08 is going to go all the way down to the wire. As it stands, it’s almost certain that the final will be contested between two of Namibia , Kenya and defending champion Ireland .

All will come down to Ireland’s Africa tour in October when it will probably need to win both games to keep alive the dream of winning three titles in a row. It will surely be a thrilling conclusion to another successful staging of the event and will set up an exciting November final at a venue yet to be finalised.

Play starts at 1030 on Saturday and the umpires for the match are Mark Benson from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Neils Bagh from the ICC Associate and Affiliate International Panel of Umpires.

Squads:

Netherlands (from): Peter Borren (captain), Eric Szwarczycinski, Rifais Bakas, Mohamed Kashif, Daan van Bunge, Tom de Grooth, Maurits Jonkman, Lesley Stokkers, Edgar Schiferli, Atse Buurman, Pieter Seelaar, Mudassar Bukhari.

Kenya (from): Steve Tikolo (captain), Thomas Odoyo, Kennedy Otieno, Peter Ongondo, Tony Suji, Hiren Varaiya, Rakep Patel, Morris Ouma, Jimmy Kamande, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Elijah Otieno, Alex Obanda, Ragheb Aga, David Obuya, Alfred Luseno, Collins Obuya.

Lanka take great pride in their record at home

Anil Kumble

ANY WHICH way you look at it we left Sri Lanka with sense of strong disappointment. The scoreline read 2-1 but we know, in our hearts, that we squandered a rare and good opportunity to beat the Lankans in their backyard. Not too many teams have been able to do this in the recent past and Sri Lanka take great pride in their record at home.

After losing the first Test and coming back strongly in the second one at Galle we won an important toss in the final Test at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium. All series the toss has played a role, but you still have to do well once you win the toss and make the first innings of the match count. Instead what we did was first fail with the bat – 249 after winning the toss and choosing to bat was never going to be good enough – and then further let them off the hook by allowing their tail to stretch their first innings as long as they did.

All the batsmen in our side got starts but at the highest level that's not enough. There were no big scores in the final Test and this really cost us in a game that was a series decider. Virender Sehwag's first-innings double-hundred was a big factor at Galle and without that we would have found it very hard to win the Test and get back into this series. In a team game, it's very important for those who are doing well to really make it count as it helps those who are struggling to overcome their difficulties. Often, when a series has been lost the tendency is only to look at those who fail. But sometimes it's also worth asking, 'those who were in good form and doing well, getting starts, could they have done a bit more?' In a team sport it's the end result that matters, not the batsmen saying the bowlers have failed or vice-versa. You have to work together to make up for whichever department is lacking.

A common theme through our series is that we did not really make the most of the chances that came our way. In the final Test, for example, we had the game in our control till the end of the second day. In both innings we had a chance to make it count with the bat and the simple fact is that we failed to do so. Of course, the injuries coming as they did, all on the same day, did not help our cause in any way, but that's not an excuse on my part. We really missed out on a great opportunity to win a series in Sri Lanka.

Ajantha Mendis was a deciding factor in many ways. Muttiah Muralitharan always gives it his best and he is a champion, but to have two spinners operating in tandem and controlling the game makes it very different for the opposition. In that light, from our point of view, I could have done better and provided more support to Harbhajan, in terms of picking up wickets.

In hindsight there were a couple of situations where we could have done better, where if things had gone our way it may have made a difference. Full credit to VVS Laxman for the way he batted in intense pain and discomfort in the final innings – it was a special effort from him. Ideally we would have liked a couple of our middle-order batsmen to find form early in the series as that could have made a difference.

All in all, though, I'd have to point to two pieces of statistics: we made only one hundred, and took one five-for all tour. You have to have stronger performances than that in the long form. That made the difference between victory and defeat.

ICC confirms delegations to meet stakeholders from New Zealand, Australia, England and South Africa

Karachi, 13 August 2008

Visits to provide information on security arrangements

Task team approves tournament to be staged at two venues – Karachi and Lahore

ICC Chief Executive Lorgat: “Concentration on two venues will provide extra level of comfort for all stakeholders”

“Visit to Pakistan has allowed task team to deal in reality instead of theories or perceptions”

The ICC’s task team for the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan has agreed to send delegations to meet with stakeholders from New Zealand, Australia, England and South Africa.

And it has confirmed the tournament will be staged at two venues – Lahore and Karachi – with Rawalpindi not now hosting any matches (tournament schedule is attached).

The group dispatched to the UK, led by ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat, will present early next week, while the delegation to New Zealand and Australia, will be led by ICC General Manager – Cricket, David Richardson.

That group will also include Tim May, the Chief Executive of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), and also Pakistan coach and former Australia fast bowler Geoff Lawson. It will present on 14 August (New Zealand) and 15 August (Australia).

The decisions were approved as part of a telephone hook-up of the task team on Tuesday evening following two days of observations, meetings and presentations received by task team members in Pakistan.

Reflecting on the groups that will journey to Australia and New Zealand and also to the UK, where England and South Africa are playing, chairman of the task team and ICC President David Morgan said: “Our desire is to ensure that every stakeholder is content with arrangements and is comfortable with the ICC Champions Trophy taking place in Pakistan.

“To that end, it was agreed that representatives who have attended the latest briefings and demonstrations in Lahore and Karachi will visit stakeholders who have expressed reservations to let them know of the safety and security measures on the ground.

“The results of those meetings will then be fed back to me and also to the ICC Vice President Sharad Pawar and ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat on 20 August so we can make a further assessment of the comfort levels of our participating members.

“We are committed to a safe and secure event in Pakistan. We believe these visits and the feedback we get from them will play a major role in us achieving those ends,” he added.

Explaining the decision to switch to two venues, Mr Lorgat, who led the task team’s trip, said: “During the recently completed Asia Cup there were no fixtures at Rawalpindi and that didn’t allow us the opportunity to check the security arrangements, so there has been no way for us to formulate an opinion on the venue.

“We believe that by excluding Rawalpindi and using just two venues, both of them successful hosts during the Asia Cup, it will remove doubt, allow a further concentration of resources and thus improve comfort levels for all stakeholders in the event.”

The decision to focus the tournament on Karachi and Lahore was agreed by the task team and signed off by other stakeholders, including competing teams and player representatives.

Lahore will stage eight of the tournament’s 15 matches, including the opener between the hosts and the West Indies, on 12 September, the second semi-final on 26 September and the final two days later.

Karachi will stage the remaining matches, including defending champions Australia’s opening match, against India, on 13 September, and blockbuster encounters between Pakistan and Australia (15 September) and India and Pakistan (20 September).

Those members of the task team that visited Pakistan from Sunday to Tuesday included Mr Lorgat and representatives of the Federation of International Players’ Associations (FICA), the ICC’s official broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports and the ICC’s independent security consultants.

The group, together with officials from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), met with foreign diplomats as well as officials from the Pakistan Ministry of the Interior.

Aside from observing security measures, they also received a series of demonstrations and presentations.

Commenting on the two days Mr Lorgat said: “We are all grateful for the opportunity to visit Pakistan and receive briefings and demonstrations which have allowed us to observe first hand the reality rather than deal in theories or perceptions.

“Having received those briefings and demonstrations and having had a telephone hook-up with all members of the task team, we will now seek to brief major stakeholders, including players, player representatives and Boards, on what we have seen.

“As the ICC, our aim is to ensure we have a safe and successful event that is enjoyed by everyone following our great game of cricket.

“What is clear from our visit is that there is a huge desire within Pakistan, as well as significant resources, to turn that aim into a reality,” added Mr Lorgat.

The terms of reference of the task team formed by the ICC Board at its teleconference on 24 July are as follows:

To ensure the effective implementation of the recommendations of the ICC’s independent security advisors; and

Liaise with various stakeholders, including embassies within Pakistan and other Governments, on an ongoing basis to ensure effective communication and the management of any concerns that may exist.

In addition to Mr Lorgat and representatives of the ICC’s broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports, its independent security advisors and FICA, the other individuals on the task team are the ICC President David Morgan, Sharad Pawar, the ICC Vice President, the ICC Principal Advisor Inderjit Singh Bindra and Dr Nasim Ashraf, the Chairman of the PCB.

Tendulkar, who started the series in 13th position, finished in 23rd place after scoring 95 runs at 15.83. He drops six places after scores of six and 14 in the third and final Test which Sri Lanka won by eight wickets to clinch the series 2-1.

It is his lowest ranking since late 1992 after spending over 15 years in the top 20 apart from a very brief spell at the end of 2006.

Tendulkar, who is just 76 runs short of becoming the leading run-getter in Test cricket history, last occupied the top batting position six years ago after the 2002 Headingley Test in England.

Tendulkar’s drop is the only bad news for India batting as others have made good upward progress.

Virender Sehwag has become the highest-ranked India ’s batsman after returning to the top 10 for the first time since March 2006. Sehwag, who scored an impressive 344 runs in the series, has lifted one place to 10th with Pakistan ’s Yunus Khan firmly within his sights.

VVS Laxman, who scored 25 and 61 not out in the series decider, has climbed three places to 15th position while Rahul Dravid shares 16th place with England ’s Alastair Cook. Dravid improves his position by two places after scores of 10 and 68 while Cook jumps four places following his contribution of 39 and 67 in The Oval Test.

Saurav Ganguly has improved his ranking by one place and now sits in 25th position while opener Gautam Gambhir, who was the second leading run-getter for his side with 310 runs, is in 37th place after jumping 12 places.

For Sri Lanka , Kumar Sangakkara has just missed out on reclaiming the top slot from the West Indies ’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The 30-year-old from Matale, who dropped to fifth after the second Test in Galle , has jumped to second position after hitting a superlative 144 in Sri Lanka ’s first innings score of 396.

However, a knock of just four in the second innings, when Sri Lanka was chasing 123 for victory, denied him the top place.

In sharp contrast to the India batmen, Sri Lanka batsmen have just strengthened their current batting positions without gaining many places.

Captain Mahela Jayawardena stays in sixth position, Tillekeratne Dilshan maintains 31st spot, Thilan Samaraweera retains 33rd position while Malinda Warnapura climbs up five places to 40th position.

Like Tendulkar , South Africa ’s most accomplished batsman Jacques Kallis has also paid the price for a run of bad form by dropping out of the top 10 for the first time since March 2003.

Kallis scored 104 runs at 14.85, including scores of two and nine at The Oval, and has dropped three places to 11th. Kallis, who started the series in sixth place, had briefly held the top batting slot in 2005.

While captain Graeme Smith has firmly held on to his 12th position, AB de Villiers has achieved his career-best 18th position. He was South Africa ’s leading run-getter in the series with 384 runs, including knocks of 39 and 97 in the last Test of the series that has helped him to rise four places.

Ashwell Price, who scored four and 24 at The Oval, has dropped four places to share 19th spot with West Indies ’ Ramnaresh Sarwan while Neil McKenzie has slipped two places to 26th position, one ahead of team-mate Hashim Amla who is up three to 27th place.

Apart from Cook, Paul Collingwood is the other England batsman to make movement in the right direction. The Durham all-rounder scored 61 and 25 not out at The Oval which has helped him to climb four places to 21st position.

Captain Kevin Pietersen has strengthened his eighth position but Ian Bell and Pietersen’s predecessor Michael Vaughan have lost significant ground in batting list. Bell has dropped six places to 22nd spot while Vaughan sits in 41st position after losing four places.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, South Africa’s Makhaya Ntini has swapped places with England’s Ryan Sidebottom who missed the last Test. Ntini had figures of 7-149 which has put him in clear fifth position while Sidebottom has dropped to sixth after losing one per cent of his rating for missing the match.

England ’s Monty Panesar has jumped three places to share 10th place with India captain Anil Kumble who has dropped a place following figures of 3-157 in the third Test at Colombo .

England fast bowler James Anderson, who started the series in 26th place, has rocketed to a career-best 15th position. The Lancastrian was the joint-leading wicket-taker with South Africa ’s Morne Morkel with 15 wickets, including 5-127 in England ’s consolation victory at The Oval.

Harbhajan Singh, Andrew Flintoff and Zaheer Khan, who are the other bowlers in the top 20, have lost one place each. They are now in 12th, 16th and 19th positions respectively while Kallis has improved his bowling ranking by two places and is now in 20th place after figures of 3-61 at The Oval.

Sri Lanka ’s bowling sensation Ajanta Mendis has jumped to 30th position only after three Tests. The 23-year-old from Moratuwa took 26 wickets in his debut series at little over 18, including 8-137 in the third Test at Colombo .

Muttiah Muralidaran is still on top of the bowling chart, leading second-placed Australia fast bowler Stuart Clark and third-placed Dale Steyn of South Africa by a comfortable margin.

There is little change in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders with Sri lanka ’s Chaminda Vaas returning to the top five. He has replaced New Zealand ’s Jacob Oram who has slipped to sixth.

The list is still headed by Kallis with New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori second and Flintoff in third place.

A series defeat on home soil is more devastating than series lost on foreign soil

Javagal Srinath

A series defeat on home soil is more devastating than series lost on foreign soil. But with Srilankan proximity and similarity in general, playing in Srilanka is as good as playing on the home soil. In total this defeat is a matter of grave concern to Indian test cricket.

Anil Kumble was quite candid in the post match presentation blaming the defeat squarely on the batsmen. Barring Sehwag's one match winning innings, none of the other Indian batsmen were able to adapt to the given conditions. The worrying factor is the collective failure of the Indian famous quartet in Sachin, Saurav, Rahul and Laxman.

There could be whispers around Indian camp about the referral systems not working for them. But the fact remains that the rules of the referral system applies equally and squarely for both the teams. Even the team management was not brave enough to make bold decisions in blooding one or two youngsters to blend with the failing veterans. Although bowling looked good in patches, the fewer runs put on board by the Indian batsmen only inspired the host more than the Indian bowlers.

It could be the creativity of the debutant Ajantha Mendis or the guile of evergreen Murali, the combined experience of the Indian batting should have withered any storm. In fact this batting debacle could be counted as one of the new lows in the last decade and a half.

Being an eternal optimist of Indian cricket the gains in this series came from Ishant and Harbhajan Singh. The lanky fast bowler growing from strength to strength looked the best in the series. Harbhajan made amends and let his performance speak. It is never easy for anyone coming from a ban to get straight into the act.
Apart form the obvious reason of batting failure there might be a new dimension that has crept into Indian cricket which could be costing the test cricket.

With the advent of T-20, the new avatar of the game, the difference between the various formats of the games are seemingly widening more and more. At the beginning of the IPL, we did hear and read about the respective cricket boards and the ICC, expressing the imminent threat and the measures to protect the Test Cricket, the traditional form of the game. The T-20 success through IPL in India found many positives. But its now time to focus on the possible repercussion. The potential threat could be the hype, glamour and the monetary benefits associated with this format. It could steal most of the young beginners along with many one- time traditionalists of the game. The change in loyalty to T-20 could put cricket in a catch-22 situation. If test matches are lost, the way we witnessed in the Srilankan series, there will be fewer takers of longer version of the game at the grass root level. At one end we might see many seekers for the T -20 which could leave the test cricket orphaned in the near future.

It is time for the custodians and the stake holders of the game to check the health of Test cricket.

McCallan praises “different class” White

Dubai , 11 August 2008

Ireland look for positives from rain-ruined draw with Canada ; Scotland ’s wash-out with Kenya moves it to second in the table – for now

Ireland captain Kyle McCallan has praised the effort of middle-order batsman Andrew White, who scored a brilliant century against Canada in the rain-affected ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Malahide.

White made an unbeaten 109, his second century in his 13th first-class match, and featured in a 154-run fifth-wicket partnership with Kevin O’Brien to take the home team, at one stage struggling at 142-4, through to 326-6 declared.

In response Canada slipped to 52-2 before recovering to 141-5 but with no play on the last day the first innings could not be completed and so both the teams picked up three points each.

“It’s the best Whitey has played in a long time. The one-day game has made him into a bit of a fiddler and nudger, trying to create runs where there aren’t any and his improvisation has been vital to us over the years,” McCallan said.

“Here, he was able to play proper cricket and I thought he batted magnificently. That was the Andy White of old, back to before he went to Northamptonshire.

“I hope this is a big kick on for him, and he carries into all the ODIs coming up. He was a different class to anything (else) we’ve watched in this game,” said McCallan.

Ireland will face Canada in an ODI at Clontarf on Tuesday before taking on Kenya in a three-match ODI series to be played on 24, 25 and 27 August at Stormont.

In Titwood , Scotland ’s ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya was abandoned without a ball being bowled giving each team 10 points. This means Kenya has moved ahead of Ireland into third spot and it looks like it could be between Namibia , Kenya and Ireland to fight it out for the two final berths.

McCallan said the drawn match against Canada has given his team a new challenge. “It’s all very disappointing. If we had four full days play, I think we would have won it okay.

“We never seem to win this competition without overcoming a few obstacles along the way, and this has given us a new challenge. We have to go to Africa now and get a result, either against Namibia or Kenya , or maybe both,” said McCallan.

October will be crunch time for this competition with Ireland travelling to take on Kenya and Namibia in their own back yards. It has been an enthralling event so far and it looks like it will be a thrilling finish with the finals places still up for grabs right to the last group matches.

“ Canada dug in really well, and it wasn’t the easiest pitch to try and get quick wickets,” said McCallan. “The weather conditions meant that there wasn’t a great deal of pace and bounce, and although there was a bit of turn, players had plenty of time to adjust.

“It was always going to be a war of attrition, and unfortunately the weather didn’t give us time to bowl them out. Andre (Botha) being injured didn’t help our cause, but we’ve big games coming up, and I didn’t want him to break down,” he added.

Scotland , like Canada and the UAE, has finished its seven league matches and though it is currently occupying second place on 82 points, it is likely to be overtaken by Kenya and Ireland in October with each side having two matches remaining.

For Scotland , Neil McCallum was the leading run-getter with 343 runs from seven innings in six matches while Fraser Watts, with 261 runs, was the other leading scorer.

The bowling honours went to fast bowler Dewald Nel who took 19 wickets at 17.78. John Blain (18), Ross Lyons (14) and Craig Wright (10) were the other bowlers to reach double figures.

Sri Lanka breathing down India ’s neck after series victory

Dubai, 11 August 2008

South Africa stays second in Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship

Sri Lanka was breathing down India ’s neck after a 2-1 series win over its Asian neighbours while South Africa retained its second place in the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship after defeating England by an identical margin on Monday.

Sri Lanka leapfrogged England into fourth place and is now just one ratings point behind third-placed India as the series result earned Mahela Jayawardena’s side five points but cost Anil Kumble’s men four ratings points.

Sri Lanka now sits on 108 ratings points after starting on 103 while India has slipped to 109 after entering the series on 113.

As Sri Lanka will not play any more Tests until May next year, it will pin its hopes on Australia to put it ahead of India . Ricky Ponting’s side will travel to India in October for a four-Test series and if it wins the series 3-0, Kumble’s men will drop behind Jayawarden’a side by one ratings point.

However, if India beats Australia by a similar margin, it will leapfrog South Africa into second place on 118 ratings points and will trail Ricky Ponting’s side by just nine ratings points.

India can further reduce that gap to seven points if it wins the two-Test series against England later this December as a 2-0 win will take it to 120 ratings points against Australia ’s 127.

South Africa retained its second place in the championship table after earning one ratings point for its 2-1 victory over England which dropped two ratings points and slipped to 104, four behind third-placed Sri Lanka and four ahead of sixth-placed Pakistan .

South Africa will now play Bangladesh in a two-Test series in November and a 2-0 win will earn it one ratings point.

Rain the only winner as Ireland v Canada game ends in damp draw

Dubai , 11 August 2008

Scotland v Kenya abandoned without a ball being bowled

It was predicted, it came and it ruined everything. The weather forecasters got it right in Ireland and Scotland over the past few days, unfortunately, much to the frustration of cricket fans as both ICC Intercontinental Cup matches scheduled for Glasgow and Dublin were abandoned.

In Titwood, Scotland against Kenya was abandoned without a ball being bowled giving each team 10 points while in Malahide, Ireland and Canada did manage to get in a total of 141 overs but it was not enough even to conclude the first innings and the game was declared a draw giving the sides three points each.

That means Scotland draws level on points with Namibia at the top of the table although Ryan Watson’s team has played two games more than the Africans.

Meanwhile, Kenya slips ahead of Ireland into third spot and it looks like it could be between Namibia , Kenya and Ireland to fight it out for the two final berths. Scotland ’s race is run having played all its seven matches and it is highly unlikely it will be enough to see it contest the final.

At Malahide, the highlight of the drawn game was an Andrew White century as Ireland amassed 326-6 declared when they did manage to get out into the middle. In reply, Canada made 141-5 thanks mainly to a stubborn innings of Sunil Dhaniram (70 not out).

October will be crunch time for this competition with Ireland traveling to Africa to take on Kenya and Namibia in their own back yards. It has been an enthralling event so far it looks like it will be a thrilling finish with the finals places still up for grabs right to the last group matches.

Same Old Wine in a New Bottle

Anshuman Gaekwad

Same Old Wine in a New Bottle.World's best batsmans are poorly surrendering infront of a new face of Sri Lankan Cricket team. All seniors announced just before the series that they will not allow to repeat Mendis Magic. But at the end,we have seen the same story- India down on its knees , middle-order struggling with form, leveled the series after losing the first match and again failed to perform in the crucial moment. It seems time has come for BCCI to start thinking about their future course of action regarding formation of test squad.

In the first test at Colombo, India faced worst and awful defeat in test Cricket against Sri Lanka. Our Test Specialists failed to perform against Mendis-Murali Combination.Indian Cricket fans were expection a come-back performance from them.Although India leveled the series in the next match but all credit goes to Viru & Bhajji not our so called specialist batsman who are known as best against spin.Apart from technology controversy in Umpiring decisions, debate will start about middle-order's performance and fitness issue.People already started asking that why not Raina or Rohit Sharma in the middle-order in place of Couple of seniors.

In the darkness only silvers of lights were performance of Indian Opening pair-highest run-getter Sehwag & Goutam Gambhir. After a long times we got perfect opening pair in our test team.Only these two batsman can differenciate themselves from rest of the batsman.

It's same scenario in the bowling department.Lack of perfect bowling pair, inconsistency , fail to keep line & length. In last couple of years, we haven't seen any Indian bowler has been able to confirm his place in the team for long.Either failed to show Consistant performance or fitness problem- they are out of team.Kumble,Harbhajan & Zaheer combination surprisingly failed to get success in this series when Mendis-Murali-Vaas stunned the Indians. At the end of day three Sri Lankan are almost close to their home series win against India. It looks diffucult for injured Laxman & out-of form Dravid to change the situation when all other specialist batsman are back into the pavallion and still two days to go. Now test matches seems to be getting over before the fifth day. It seems that the T20 hangover is still plaguing Indian Team.

White washes Canada ’s hopes away

Dubai , 8 August 2008

All-rounder hits century as Ireland makes hay while the sun shines in Malahide; no play on day two of Scotland v Kenya in Glasgow

An unbeaten century from Andrew White put Ireland into a strong position on a sunny day two of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada at Malahide on Friday.

With day one entirely washed out, it was important Ireland made the most of the more settled weather when it came. And it certainly made the most of that opportunity. The Irishmen scored 326-6 declared and then proceeded to take three Canadian wickets before the close to put themselves firmly in the box seat.

White was the home side’s hero of the day, hitting an unbeaten 109, a knock that included 14 boundaries in 141 deliveries. His fifth-wicket partnership of 154 with Kevin O’Brien was crucial after a very evenly balanced first 50 overs left Ireland on 142-4.

O’Brien made 75 off 97 balls (nine fours and four sixes) and played a fine support role on what was ultimately White’s day to shine.

Then it was the turn of skipper Kyle McCallan to take centre stage. First, the 32-year-old off-spinner ran out opener Ruvindu Gunasekara and then came on to bowl, dismissing Mohammed Iqbal and Sami Faridi inside his first five overs, leaving the visitors reeling on 31-3 at the close.

The job, however, is far from done for Ireland . There is still plenty of batting to come for Canada including Geoff Barnett and Qaiser Ali who are the not-out batsmen overnight.

Also, the weather forecast is poor for the weekend so the Irish will want to make the most of every minute they spend on the field of play.

It was a difficult day for Canada ’s bowlers but Steve Welsh did well, taking 2-89 off 23 overs, as no other bowler took more than one wicket each.

Meanwhile, at Titwood, Glasgow there was no play between Scotland and Kenya as the rain continued to play havoc with this match. That’s two days that the players have been sitting in the pavilion looking out the window rather than playing and the chances of this match producing a result are now fast diminishing.

The ICC Intercontinental Cup has quickly grown in stature and profile since its inception three years ago and now the ICC’s premier first-class tournament is an integral part of the Associate Members’ cricket schedule.

ICC Intercontinental Cup matches suffer damp start

Dubai , 7 August 2008

This year’s wet summer in Ireland and Scotland made its presence felt again today as day one of both the Ireland versus Canada game at Malahide and the Scotland versus Kenya match at Titwood, Glasgow was washed out without a single ball being bowled.

And with the weather set to be unsettled over the weekend, there is no guarantee the game in Scotland will start let alone provide a result. The forecast is more promising for Dublin on Friday so hopes are high the players will at least get the match underway.

Weather-permitting the start times in both Malahide and Titwood have been brought forward half and hour to 1030.

Every Test match is important

Anil Kumble

EVERY TEST match is important, especially when you're captain of a team, but some matches assume more significance than others because of events leading up to them or the context in which they are played. We started badly, came back really strongly in the last game and now we are in a position to win a match and with it the series. That is what we came here hoping to achieve in the first place – a series win in Sri Lanka.

What helps is that we are going into the final Test full of confidence thanks to our comfortable win in the last match. When I look around me in the dressing-room I see a team that is happy and people who have confidence in themselves and their team-mates. In each person there is a quiet determination to go out there and secure a victory for the team.

Parthiv Patel gets a break in this game, making a comeback after a gap of four years. It's a good chance for him. Dinesh Karthik looked a bit low on confidence behind the stumps and this means he misses out. As much as it is a good break for Parthiv, it would also do the team's cause some good if he can contribute.

When we saw the pitch during our practice sessions at the P Sarvanamuttu Stadium there was some grass on it and it has a reputation of being a bit lively. But I have my doubts whether there will be any grass left on it by the start of the Test match.

The toss has proved to be quite important, as we expected it would be, but we're well prepared irrespective of whether we get lucky or not. We have the confidence that we can take 20 wickets and score big runs, and that's the important thing.

The middle-order was shaping up well in the last Test but we're yet to see a substantial contribution from those batsmen. I'm sure each of the four batsmen in the middle-order are itching to get runs and this will be a good time for them to fire. That said, we have got strong starts from the opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir and hopefully that trend will continue. The lower-order has been a bit of a let down, but even there we have people who can occupy the crease purposefully and that's an area where a contribution is welcome.

We bowled well in partnerships, whether it's the fast bowlers or Harbhajan Singh and myself and we need to do that in this Test as well to sustain the pressure on Sri Lanka.

Finally, I'd just like to say that our thoughts are with Gary Kirsten as he is by his mother's side, at a time when she needs him. We're all hoping that things go well and Gary will be back with the team in the near future.

ICC thanks Cricket Ireland for “great success” of ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Belfast

Belfast, 6 August 2008

Ireland and the Netherlands guaranteed places in ICC World Twenty20 2009 in England while Scotland’s inclusion dependent on Zimbabwe Cricket’s decision

ICC High Performance Manager Richard Done has labelled the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Belfast, Ireland “a great success.”

The top six Associate teams’ event featured 11 matches at Stormont spread over four days and culminated on Tuesday with Ireland and the Netherlands sharing the spoils after the final was rained off without a ball being bowled.

Both teams can now look forward to next year’s ICC World Twenty20 to be staged in June in England and if Zimbabwe ratifies its decision to step back from the tournament then Scotland, which finished third, will join them.

Reflecting on the Belfast tournament, Mr Done said: “It was disappointing to see the final being rained-off but apart from that, I think the tournament was excellently organized and we saw some very exciting matches with the ball dominating the bat.

“This event gave the top six Associate sides a chance to qualify for the main event in England next year through playing in the Twenty20 format. This was a good progression considering that for the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 2007 in South Africa, Kenya and Scotland qualified on their performance in the 50-over-a-side ICC World Cricket League Division 1 in Nairobi.

“As for the bottom three sides in Belfast, Kenya, Canada and Bermuda, they can assess what went wrong and work towards to the opportunity to re-qualify for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in 2009.

“With Ireland, the Netherlands and perhaps Scotland making the trip to England next year, they will also be able to review their performances and fine tune in the right areas so that when they arrive for in June 2009 they are ready to challenge the leading sides.

“They can also look forward to that ICC CWC Qualifier next year with confidence after their performances under pressure this week,” he added.

Although the Belfast tournament’s trophy was shared, Ireland will be classified as Associate one in the tournament draw on the basis of its 10th place in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship, while the Netherlands will be classified as Associate two.

If Zimbabwe confirms it won’t play, Ireland will take Zimbabwe’s place in Group A (with India and Bangladesh), the Netherlands will ease into Group B (with England and Pakistan) and Scotland, which defeated Kenya in the third and fourth-place play-off on Monday, takes a position in Group D (with South Africa and New Zealand).

However, if Zimbabwe opts not to ratify its earlier decision taken at the Annual Conference to step back from the tournament, Ireland will join England and Pakistan in Group B and the Netherlands will form Group D with South Africa and New Zealand.

Mr Done paid tribute to the organisers, the local clubs, the supporters and the teams themselves for combining to create a successful tournament.

“On behalf of the ICC I would like to thank Cricket Ireland and the ICC Event Manager Andrew Faichney for doing such a terrific job in staging these matches,” he said.

“It has involved a great deal of work and sacrifice for all concerned, not least from the players and support staffs of all the competing teams. You can all reflect on a job well done.”

Ireland took the hardest possible road to the final thanks to a penultimate-ball victory over Scotland on Saturday, a last-gasp win over Bermuda on Sunday and a narrow four-wicket win over Kenya in the semi-final.

In contrast, the Netherlands stunned Kenya by 19 runs in the opener before losing to Canada by four wickets. But with other results going its way, it reached the last four where it outplayed Scotland, winning by five wickets.

Scotland bounced back nicely after suffering a narrow loss against Ireland, defeating Bermuda by eight wickets and then thumping Kenya by nine wickets in the third and fourth-place play-off – thanks to a joint-fifth highest first wicket partnership in T20I history between captain Ryan Watson and Durham’s Kyle Coetzer.

Watson and Coetzer put on 102 runs for the first wicket to join Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist who put on the same total for the opening wicket against Bangladesh at Cape Town in the ICC World Twenty20 2007 in South Africa.

Bermuda lost all three matches it played but its best chance came in the rain-curtailed match against Ireland when it was left to chase a revised target of 46 in eight overs to earn a place in the semi-finals. Bermuda lost the match by four runs by the Duckworth-Lewis method and Ireland qualified for the semi-final where it defeated Kenya to reach the final.

Ireland all-rounder Andre Botha was declared player of the tournament for his 61 runs and eight wickets.

Ireland and the Netherlands share trophy after ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier final is rained-off

Belfast, 5 August 2008

Ireland and the Netherlands shared the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier trophy after the final was rained-off without a ball being bowled at Stormont in Belfast , Ireland on Tuesday.

After a delayed toss by 30 minutes, which Ireland won and decided to field, persistent light showers and thick cloud cover prevented the groundsmen from removing the covers from the square. The umpires, Sarika Prasad and Paul Baldwin, made a few inspections before deciding to call off the match at 1630 (local time).

As the final played out, Ireland will be Associate 1 in the tournament group of the the ICC World Twenty20 ground on the basis its 10th place in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship while the Netherlands will be Associate 2 as it leads the Associate ODI ranking table.

This means if Zimbabwe opts not to ratify its earlier decision taken at the Annual Conference to step back from the tournament, Ireland will join England and Pakistan in Group B and the Netherlands will form Group D with South Africa and New Zealand .

However, if Zimbabwe confirms it won’t play, Ireland will take Zimbabwe’s place in Group A (with India and Bangladesh), the Netherlands will ease into Group B (with England and Pakistan) and Scotland, which defeated Kenya in the third and fourth-place play-off on Monday, takes a position in Group D (with South Africa and New Zealand).

The Netherlands captain Jeroen Smits said he was disappointed with the outcome. “Obviously it is disappointing because as a cricketer, you want to go out there and try to give your best performance instead of sitting in the dressing room and waiting for the match to start.

“As an Associate team, we would like to play as many Twenty20 matches as possible and when one match is washed-out, it’s an opportunity lost.

“But as it has panned out, we are joint-winner and a winner is a winner. So I am happy,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Canada defeated Bermuda by eight wickets in the fifth and sixth-place play-off.

In overcast conditions, Canada put Bermuda into bat and bowled it out for 70 on the final ball of the 20th over. The North American side faced little problem in achieving victory in 10.3 overs.

Geoff Barnett scored 31 not out with five fours and Ashish Bagai scored 15 not out after John Davison had hit a rapid 19 off 13 balls with two fours and a six.

However, it was Steven Welsh who walked away with the man-of-the-match award after recording figures of 3-0-6-2.

It’s back to first-class business for Ireland in the ICC Intercontinental Cup

Dubai, 5 August 2008

Holders and two-time champions are off the back of qualification for ICC World Twenty20 2009; key game to maintain push for ICC Intercontinental Cup final

Canada looks for consolation from failure in ICC WT20 Q, aiming to end disappointing first-class campaign on a high

After the excitement of qualifying for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in England next year, it’s back to the business of first-class cricket for Ireland on Thursday – with the small matter of trying to maintain its push for a hat-trick of ICC Intercontinental Cup titles.

With the top of the table tight and four sides vying for two final places, a win for the Irish is a must – and Kyle McCallan’s side needs to achieve that against Canada, the team it beat in the 2007 final.

It’s been almost 15 months since that encounter at Grace Road, Leicester in the UK and plenty has changed in that time. Both teams have new captains and Canada has been unable to maintain the form it showed to reach the final on that occasion.

One win in six matches tells its own story as the North American side has struggled to replace the runs of Ashish Bagai – playing just once because of work commitments – and the penetration with the ball of Umar Bhatti.

Last year left-armer Bhatti and Henry Osinde formed perhaps the best new-ball attack in the Associate world but in this campaign Bhatti has played only half the matches and although Osinde has captured 15 wickets in five matches, those wickets have come at almost 34 runs apiece.

Canada’s other problem has been its turnover of players. For one reason or another it has been unable to pick a settled side. 29 players used in six matches and only one player, Sunil Dhaniram, playing in every game tells its own story.

Dhaniram has been one of the few rays of light for Canada with 472 runs at 59.00 and 17 wickets at 25.17 with his left-arm spin.

All those facts and figures must give Ireland the belief that it can win this match with a full haul of 20 points. And if it can do that, depending on the result of the Scotland – Kenya match, it could go to the top of the table.

That would mean it overtaking long-time leaders Namibia and with Ireland’s other two remaining matches against that side and another one of its rivals for a final spot, Kenya, it is clear that Ireland’s destiny is very much in its own hands.

Former captain Trent Johnston, the last man to lift the ICC Intercontinental Cup, lines up but Ireland is without county cricketers Eoin Morgan and Niall O’Brien.

Morgan (Middlesex) missed the European Championships with a knee injury and also sat out the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier while wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O’Brien heads back to Northamptonshire after the Belfast tournament.

Gary Wilson, who is on the books of Surrey will, however, play and will keep wicket in place of Niall O’Brien.

The umpires for the match are Charlie McElwee and Sarika Prasad.

It’s as good as winner-takes-all for Scotland and Kenya in ICC Intercontinental Cup clash

Dubai, 5 August 2008

Scotland has to win to stand any chance of a final berth; defeat for Kenya would leave it with an uphill task

Scotland hopes for repeat of easy win in ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier; Kenya looks to recover lost pride

If it isn’t a case of winner takes all in Scotland’s ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya starting on Thursday then it is as close to it as makes no difference.

If Scotland loses then it is officially out of the running for a final berth while, for Kenya, defeat would leave it facing an uphill task to try and qualify.

Success for the Scots would actually take it the head of affairs, 10 points clear of long-time leader Namibia. But as it is the last match of the round-robin stage for Ryan Watson’s team it would then face an anxious wait to see if remaining results went in its favour.

Ireland, one of Scotland’s closest rivals, face away matches against Kenya and Namibia while one of Namibia’s remaining matches is at home against bottom side Bermuda.

Scotland’s best hope appears to lie in victory followed by Namibia winning its two remaining matches (it has five wins from five at this stage) and Kenya and Ireland cancelling each other out. But there seems sure to be plenty of twists and turns before this group stage is over, especially given Kenya – Ireland is the last round-robin match.

The Scots, of course, are on a high after finishing in third place in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Belfast, a spot that will give them a place in next year’s main event in England provided Zimbabwe Cricket’s board ratifies a decision made at the ICC annual conference, to step back from the event.

And to secure that third place Scotland beat Kenya in one of the most convincing – and one-sided – matches of the tournament, chasing down 107 to win for the loss of just one wicket with 11 balls in hand after Kyle Coetzer and Watson added 102 for the first wicket.

Coetzer has headed back to county cricket duty with Durham and is one of four changes in the squad with wicketkeeper Colin Smith, opener Gavin Hamilton and another county player, Navdeep Poonia (Warwickshire) all missing for the re-match with the African side.

In their places come Dougie Lockhart (who will open the innings and replace Smith behind the stumps), spinner Ross Lyons, Qasim Sheikh and Omer Hussain.

Lyons collected six wickets against Bermuda and seven against Canada, while Lockhart made his maiden first-class hundred in Toronto, a game in which Sheikh made 92.

The Scots are, quite simply, flying, and from a point two matches ago when even the coach Peter Steindl seemed to think it had nothing to play for, now the players will know another win will give them hope for a spot in the final.

Quoted on http://www.cricketeurope.net/, Steindl said: “We look forward to playing Kenya, knowing that we have to win this, our final game to have any chance of reaching the I-Cup final.”

But if Scotland is flying then Kenya is struggling for lift-off. The ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier was a disaster and the loss in the third and fourth-placed play-off means it will miss out on a tournament it was a part of in South Africa in 2007.

A loss in Glasgow won’t end Kenya’s hopes of reaching the final but it will make it very tough. One of its remaining matches is against the Netherlands, which has struggled badly in this tournament, but the other is against two-time defending champions Ireland.

It will be a repeat of the 2005 final which Ireland won, but at least Kenya will have home advantage.

But before it gets to that point there is the small matter of the Scotland encounter. David Obuya and Alfred Luseno are added to the squad that was in action in Belfast.

The officials for the match will be a member of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, Simon Taufel, and Paul Baldwin, one of the ICC Associate and Affiliate International Umpires panel.
