The annual BCCI Awards Ceremony for the year 2008-09 will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, 6 December 2009, at the East Lawns of the Cricket Club of India, Mu
mbai.
The best performers in Indian cricket during the period from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009, will be honoured and rewarded.
A highlight of the ceremony will be the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of the Ranji Trophy. Rajinder Goel and Amarjit Kaypee, the highest wicket-taker and scorer respectively in the first seventy-five seasons of the Ranji Trophy (1934-35 to 2008-09), will be felicitated, as will Mumbai, for being the most successful team in the competition.
Mohinder Amarnath, the chief architect of India’s 1983 World Cup triumph, will receive the Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. He will thus emulate his father Lala Amarnath, who was the first recipient of the award in 1994.
Gautam Gambhir, the super southpaw from Delhi, will receive the Polly Umrigar Award for being India’s best international cricketer of the year. He scored 1269 runs from eight Tests @ 84.6 (inclusive of five hundreds), during the period under consideration. His most memorable efforts were 206 against Australia at Delhi, and 137 against New Zealand at Napier. He also scored 670 runs from twenty-one ODIs, and 177 runs from eight T20 Internationals, during this phase.
Amish Saheba, member of the ICC’s International Umpires’ Panel, will be the first winner of the newly-instituted annual ‘Best Umpire’ Award.
