East Bengal reign supreme

KOLKATA: Kingfisher East Bengal overcame a spirited challenge from HAL Bangalore to defeat them 2-0 in the 16th Round I-League encounter, played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, on Saturday.
Both the teams started on aggressive note. But the host find it increasingly difficult to get past the visitors defence in the first half.
It was HAL who stole the show in the first half and came very close take an early lead, in 20th minute when RC Prakash brilliantly took a volley but alert East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh punched the ball away to safety.
Though both the team kept attacking each other goalpost but much to the disappointment of the crowd the first half remained goalless.
Changing over, East Bengal seemed to have came out with some resolution. Their persistent effort finally gave them lead, when on a perfect cross from Sanju Pradhan, Saumik Dey scored the first goal in 65th minute for Red and Gold brigade.
Spurred by the first goal red and gold brigade became all more dangerous, and it paid off in the 89th minute when Penn Orgi found the back of the net to score second goal on a unselfish pass from Brazilian, Edmilson Marques who had earlier replaced Tolgay Ozbey upfront in 76th minute.
The scoreline remained unchanged till the end to hand HAL Bangalore their 13th defeat of the League.
With this win East Bengal now have 33 points from 16 matches while HAL stays at 3 points from 16 outings.
Round 7th match between the two teams was won by East Bengal by 8-1.
Sanju Pradhan (East Bengal) was adjudged man of the match.

Dempo challenge for Lajong


SHILLONG: Number nine placed Shillong Lajong FC would host League leader Dempo SC in the 16th round I League match at the Shillong's
JN Sports Complex newly laid artificial grass field on Sunday.
Dempo had thrashed Lajong in the round seven match 5-0 in latter’s away match, while Lajong who are fresh from 0-2 defeat at the hands of Churchill Brothers in their maiden match at their home turf this season, would go all out to earn at least a point.
Dempo will be missing the service of Mahesh Gawli, as he is facing a match suspension for earning a double booking.
Dempo’s Coach Armando Colaco said, “Team should perform well despite weather not favoring our side, we are professional team and we had two days practice and the boy will give good fight.”
Talking about the opponent he said “Lajong are a very competitive side the only problem they are facing is they have not been able to convert the chances.”
On the other hand Lajong have roped in Australian Mathus Osvaldo Mayora for its forward line.
“We failed to live upto the expectation of our fans in our last encounter but we will try to improve our game against Dempo,” said Lajong coach Pradyum Reddy.
Dempo are currently at 33 points from 15 matches while Shillong Lajong are at 15 points from 15 outings.

Bagan up against Prayag United

KOLKATA: Meanwhile, in an another 16th round I League encounter McDowell Mohun Bagan would face another Kolkata outfit Prayag
United SC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.
Mohun Bagan are placed at fourth position with 27 points from 15 outings while Prayag United are at combined sixth with 25 points from 15 matches.Their 7th round encounter between the two teams was won by Prayag United by 3-2.
