Effect of training break on physical fitness and technical skills of football players

Bimal Kumar Roychoudhury

Football Coach # Veteran footballer # Master of Sports # Former Deputy Director of Government of Tripura

Football is a game of continuous movement. All players’ execute explosive sports, sprints, sudden stops, twist a runs. They jump, bend dive, run, stretch and play the ball with various parts of their bodies, except hands and arms wick are use for balance and centre movements only. Football is team game, a body contact contest, which demands a high level of endurance, speed, ability etc. these abilities can only be acquired through a programme of regular conscientious training. The training of football players has become more and more scientific and systematic on the past few decades.

Methods should be adopted to set the time and facilities available. What ever a player may be required to do in training he must be considered as a whole person. A football player reacts mentally and physically in each and every situation. Certain requirement of training however makes specialised considerations necessary. This consideration arises from the development of our knowledge concerning strength, power and endurance. A soccer player is expected to produce peak performance once or twice a weak for eight or nine months and the effects of sustained competitions are difficult is calculated objectively.

Training in football as in any other sports and games is carried out to achieve high performance. Method and means of training are selected, taking into consideration and physical, technical and tactical demand placed on the players during a competitive match. The development of the game both in offence and defense and the performance demands are to be understood foe proper formulation of specific training.

ULATOWSKI (1973) has emphasized that every training programme must be realistic and related to the specificity of the activity.

HEDDERGOTT (1976) stated that a football player must be aware of the performance requirements and the principles governing performance for a high standard of play.

Training causes a reduction of fatty tissue within a muscle and this result in grater efficiency and fasted construction. The mire miter units are involved the better is the strength and more quickly the resistance can be overcome.

A year round conditioning programme is always advocated in football. These makes possible the achievement of high performance level through out entire sports season and enable further increase from year to year (Harre 1979, Matwe Jew 1981, Singh 1981).

The training programme is prepared to increase strength, endurance, speed, flexibility, technical skills, ability and acclimatization and maintain optimum weight level, psychological readiness and to form desirable health habits.

Smash Competition of Table Tennis

D. Ajay
Table Tennis is one of the fastest events of sports. Its ball moves very fast from one end of the board to the other end of the board in a rally of any standard level competition. In an average the speed of the ball is approx. 25 mph and it is crossing 2’54 meter i.e. from one end to another end of the playing surface within approx. ¼ second. So , it was very tough to measure the speed of the ball of the event as it moves within very small area.

But the thoughts of the event cultivators ultimately have given a solution on that matter. They were trying and adopting to measure the speed of the ball in the following process:

a) Using of a special type of camera having the facility of shutter speed and
adopting the estimated distance that a ball may travel over that duration
and calculating the average on that duration.

b) Analyzing the video footage of a smash and using the frame rate of the video and the location the ball as shown by the video to calculate the distance traveled during that duration.

c) Using the sound recorder by the video to measure the time interval between the striking the ball by the racket and dropping of the ball on the table and calculating the average by the distance and time during that time interval.

These are the processes are not giving any accurate result by which the speed of the ball of a rally can be measured. But recently the Inaugural World Fastest Smash Competition was held.

The 38 millimeter diameter ball was used for the competition as it is having more density than 40 millimeter diameter ball and sports speed radar gun was used for measuring the speed of the ball. The ball was stroked from a vertically dead drop where no inertia force was available.

As per Wellington Table Tennis, number of junior players of world category participated in the competition. The juniors from Japan, China and Chinese Taipei were also participated in the competition.

But the crown was achieved by a little known player who is a player of Volley ball and Marshal Arts also. His name is Mr. Lark Brandt and he plays table tennis in the Harewood Table Tennis club of Christchurch in New Zealand. He used the non- branded ITTF glue in the racket for getting more speed and it was allowed for that competition.

The speed of the ball of his smash was 112’5 kmph i.e. 69’9 mph which is now fastest in the world and the speed of the ball of runner-up was 107 kmph .But in any world class table tennis championship the average speed is 70 kmph. So the organizers are trying to include this fastest smash in the Guinness Book of World Record. This fastest smash was made with the key technique of timing, strength coupled along with the loose wrist and a flat smash.

Mr. Lark Brandt was won a brass replica canon set on New Zealand marble, an all black rugby shirt and a toy KIWI ( Kiwis are the national symbol of New Zealand).

GLUE-an important object of modern Table Tennis

D. Ajay

Glues are nothing but an adhesive and these are used in table tennis event for sticking the rubber(s) or covering material (s) with the wooden blade of the racquet. These are also used for sticking two number of rubber or covering material in case of sandwich rubber. But the glues which are in use of table tennis event not like normal adhesive of the common market. These are having special type of characteristics depending on the presence of different type of organic and in-organic substances. Generally the following substances are present in the glues:

Toxic substances
Aromatic substances
Chlorinated substances
Heptane substances
Volatile type
Cyclo-hexan substances etc.

The characteristic of the racquet varies depending on their percentage of presence in the used glue. Different types of glue are available in world table tennis market. Players of the world class championship are using various type of glue since 1970. After touching or sticking the ball by the rubber of the racquet the speed and spin of the ball changes depending on the quality of glues. Glues are very much useful for imparting speed or spin or anti-spin or fast attacking or absorbing spin etc. So players are using glues according to their own choice for their performance. Earlier players were using glue for few months. But nowadays the players are using glue for a week and sometimes it is for a tournament or for a match to achieve the maximum outcome of the glue.

Generally adhesives which are available in the normal market are non-toxic type and not so much harmful for human being especially for skin. No chance of active dermatitis disease or breathing problem found in case of contact of general adhesive available in the market with the body. But the glues which are used in table tennis event are having the chances of creating the above diseases. So these glues which are in use of table tennis event are not safe in use for human beings. The doctors related to the development of table tennis event feel to restrict the uses of glues as the event plays million of table tennis lovers.

The process on which glues are used in table tennis racquet is known as gluing. Earlier gluing was allowed in a marked area inside the stadium. After that, a separate room of the stadium was allotting by the organizing committee for gluing of the racquet. But this was not sufficient as the glues are very much un-hygienic for the health.

So the INTER NATIONAL TABLE TENNIS FEDERATION ( ITTF ) was bound to take some preventive measure restricting the branded glue with the limitation of percentage of organic and in-organic compound used in the glue. But these limitations was not sufficient for the players as there were no testing equipment available with the ITTF for testing the presence of offending compound in the used glue. So the players were violating the limitations of glue imposed by ITTF.

Ultimately the checking of the presence of the offending compound in glue of a racquet has been started in the last decade. Glue testing is nowadays a compulsory part of all the world level table tennis championship.

A German company WASSING has introduced a machine named ENEZ for testing the glue as ALLOWED or NOT ALLOWED. It is a electronic nose to sniff out the offending compound. This sniffing out are processing in a box or a container. The racquet is allowed to keep inside the container for 60 second after keeping open the container for 60 second and the electronic nose differentiate the offending compound with respect to each other and gives the result. For more accurate testing the RAE device may be used. RAE is also testing the ENEZ testing device.

Sometimes common methods are also being used by the organizing committee for testing the glue. The samples are being taken from the racquet through a syringe and dipping it into the testing solvent to check the change of the colour of the solvent. Incase case of the toxic glue the testing solvent will be changed to the brown type colour.

The outcome of the test is now safe for the users and it is enhancing the attraction of the event. It is because the number of rallies of a point i.e. continuation of play is more than earlier now.
