GRIPPING OF TABLE TENNIS RACKET
There is no concrete rule regarding the gripping or holding a table tennis racket in a game or a match by the INTERNATIONAL TABLE TENNIS FEDERATION. Only RACKET HAND and FREE HAND have been mentioned in the ITTF rule. RACKET HAND means the hand on which the racket is held and the FREE HAND means the hand on which racket is not held i.e. free. On the basis of these, a player is allowed to use only one hand for holding the racket on his own way and the player will not be allowed to use both the hand for holding or gripping the racket and the player may be allowed to change his hand from left to right & vice-versa.
But the event cultivators observed few types of gripping are very much convenient to the players for achieving maximum performance. For this reason players are commonly using the following types of grips:
a) PEN HOLD
The style of gripping the racket by the player in this method is similar to the way of holding the pen or pencil etc. The Chinese, Japanese and Korean players are commonly using this style. Normally one side of the racket is being used in this style.
But nowadays some of the players of the above countries are using both the side of the racket with a new technique of pen hold gripping.
b) SHAKE HAND
Similarly the shake hand grip means the style of gripping the racket by the player like to the way one makes hand shake with other. Normally Indian players are using this style.
c) SEEMILLER GRIP
But recently a new style has been successfully introduced which is modified type of shake hand grip. Here thumb and fore finger form a ‘V’ shape on the back hand side of the racket. This style of grip is known as ‘Seemiller Grip’ in the name of successful user Danny Seemiller of United States.

POPULARITY OF TABLE TENNIS
D. Ajay
Since the inception of the event Table Tennis event i.e. starting from the period of Ping Pong, the event were experienced lots of changes & modifications on rules – regulations-equipments etc on several occasions till today. These are only for increasing the popularity of the game. But it was never reached to the good position in International level. Whenever the popularity increases in a part of the world, the same will be decreased in another part. These are happening due to one of the basic characteristics of the event i.e. speedy game.
The numbers of rallies for a point are very less. The spectators of the event are feeling bore on maximum occasion as it is not clearly visible, accountable & charming to them. The event cultivators introduced 40 mm. diameter ball replacing the 38 mm. diameter ball after lots of experiment for increasing the continuation of rally only in a point since 2001-2002. But the percentages of effect were very less. Again the procedure of a game and match were altered and here the attractions of the spectators or sports lovers have been observed.
Few number of Table Tennis organizations of the developed country have already started fashion show on Table Tennis recently for increasing the popularity of the game. The same types of cats walk were performed at Tura during the NORTH EAST SPORTS FESTIVAL in the year as a part of the cultural programmed in the closing of Table Tennis event.
But these amounts of spectators for million numbers of players are not at all sufficient. So now the event cultivators are thinking to introduce something new item to make the event appeal & stylist for attracting the public.
Recently it is learnt that a renowned country of Table Tennis may bring the changes of uniforms i.e. mainly cloths of women category to make the event more appelatic & stylist for enhancing the popularity of the game. The length of the skirt of the women players will be reduced & practically that was trialed in one occasion by the world categogy of Table Tennis Players of China. So the observance of the spark of the popularity is awaited now. (Ref.ANI) .

BI-COLOUR SIDE OF THE RACKET
Both the sides of a racket were same in colour in the eight decade of the nineteen centaury and the then players were using different types of rubber on both the side. So it was very tough for the opponent player to guess the quality of the coming stroke and return the ball within the very short time. This was ultimately reducing the continuity of play which is not at all the motto of International Table tennis Federation.
Different types of rubbers are producing different types of strokes. When a category of rubber produces spin, other category of rubber absorbs spin. Like this rubbers are available for fast stroke and anti-spin stroke etc.
It was allowed to use one side rubber of a racket for imparting spin with a combination of another side for imparting no spin or one side for absorbing spin & another side for imparting speed during that period. More over players were rotating their racket from fore hand to back hand & vice versa in a rally for scoring a point in a game by tricking the opponent. This was resulted very less number of rallies for a point which ultimately was making the event charm less.
So the event cultivators decided that the receiver should get the chance to think about the coming stroke for making it return. As the result, the ITTF changed the rule regarding the rubbers of a racket like this:
a) Rubbers of both side of a racket must be of different colour.
b) The colour of both the side must be red & black.
c) If one side of a racket is not used by the player, it must be coloured with the other colour of the used colour.
d) All the players will be allowed to check the rackets of the opponent of the match just before the starting of the game of a match.
These are all only for providing the chance to the opponent to recognize the types of coming stroke made by the opponent.

It is probably the second highest award after RAJIB GHANDI KHEL RATNA in Indian sports offered by Govt. of India
Generally one player from one sports event is being selected by the department for one year. But it is not obvious that all the events will be considered in every year. The category of events has been declared in 2002 by the Ministry as either:

d) An event of Commonwealth Games or

20) MR ARCHANTA SARATH KAMAL IN 2004
21) MR.SOUMYADEEP ROY IN 2005
22) MR. SUBHAJIT SAHA IN 2007
It is clear from the above that the overall performances of the players of the event TABLE TENNIS in India are very much remarkable with respect to the other event for about last 50 years. Although the table tennis players were unable to be selected by the authority for the lack of extra ordinary performances for certain period but it is hopeful that a player from Table Tennis event will be able to be selected for the award on every year from now by the current enthusiasm, true spirit of sports & action of Table Tennis Federation of India.

Smash Competition of Table Tennis
But the thoughts of the event cultivators ultimately have given a solution on that matter. They were trying and adopting to measure the speed of the ball in the following process:
a) Using of a special type of camera having the facility of shutter speed and
adopting the estimated distance that a ball may travel over that duration
and calculating the average on that duration.
b) Analyzing the video footage of a smash and using the frame rate of the video and the location the ball as shown by the video to calculate the distance traveled during that duration.
c) Using the sound recorder by the video to measure the time interval between the striking the ball by the racket and dropping of the ball on the table and calculating the average by the distance and time during that time interval.
These are the processes are not giving any accurate result by which the speed of the ball of a rally can be measured. But recently the Inaugural World Fastest Smash Competition was held.
The 38 millimeter diameter ball was used for the competition as it is having more density than 40 millimeter diameter ball and sports speed radar gun was used for measuring the speed of the ball. The ball was stroked from a vertically dead drop where no inertia force was available.
As per Wellington Table Tennis, number of junior players of world category participated in the competition. The juniors from Japan, China and Chinese Taipei were also participated in the competition.
But the crown was achieved by a little known player who is a player of Volley ball and Marshal Arts also. His name is Mr. Lark Brandt and he plays table tennis in the Harewood Table Tennis club of Christchurch in New Zealand. He used the non- branded ITTF glue in the racket for getting more speed and it was allowed for that competition.
The speed of the ball of his smash was 112’5 kmph i.e. 69’9 mph which is now fastest in the world and the speed of the ball of runner-up was 107 kmph .But in any world class table tennis championship the average speed is 70 kmph. So the organizers are trying to include this fastest smash in the Guinness Book of World Record. This fastest smash was made with the key technique of timing, strength coupled along with the loose wrist and a flat smash.
Mr. Lark Brandt was won a brass replica canon set on New Zealand marble, an all black rugby shirt and a toy KIWI ( Kiwis are the national symbol of New Zealand).

GLUE-an important object of modern Table Tennis
Glues are nothing but an adhesive and these are used in table tennis event for sticking the rubber(s) or covering material (s) with the wooden blade of the racquet. These are also used for sticking two number of rubber or covering material in case of sandwich rubber. But the glues which are in use of table tennis event not like normal adhesive of the common market. These are having special type of characteristics depending on the presence of different type of organic and in-organic substances. Generally the following substances are present in the glues:
Toxic substances
Aromatic substances
Chlorinated substances
Heptane substances
Volatile type
Cyclo-hexan substances etc.
The characteristic of the racquet varies depending on their percentage of presence in the used glue. Different types of glue are available in world table tennis market. Players of the world class championship are using various type of glue since 1970. After touching or sticking the ball by the rubber of the racquet the speed and spin of the ball changes depending on the quality of glues. Glues are very much useful for imparting speed or spin or anti-spin or fast attacking or absorbing spin etc. So players are using glues according to their own choice for their performance. Earlier players were using glue for few months. But nowadays the players are using glue for a week and sometimes it is for a tournament or for a match to achieve the maximum outcome of the glue.
Generally adhesives which are available in the normal market are non-toxic type and not so much harmful for human being especially for skin. No chance of active dermatitis disease or breathing problem found in case of contact of general adhesive available in the market with the body. But the glues which are used in table tennis event are having the chances of creating the above diseases. So these glues which are in use of table tennis event are not safe in use for human beings. The doctors related to the development of table tennis event feel to restrict the uses of glues as the event plays million of table tennis lovers.
The process on which glues are used in table tennis racquet is known as gluing. Earlier gluing was allowed in a marked area inside the stadium. After that, a separate room of the stadium was allotting by the organizing committee for gluing of the racquet. But this was not sufficient as the glues are very much un-hygienic for the health.
So the INTER NATIONAL TABLE TENNIS FEDERATION ( ITTF ) was bound to take some preventive measure restricting the branded glue with the limitation of percentage of organic and in-organic compound used in the glue. But these limitations was not sufficient for the players as there were no testing equipment available with the ITTF for testing the presence of offending compound in the used glue. So the players were violating the limitations of glue imposed by ITTF.
Ultimately the checking of the presence of the offending compound in glue of a racquet has been started in the last decade. Glue testing is nowadays a compulsory part of all the world level table tennis championship.
A German company WASSING has introduced a machine named ENEZ for testing the glue as ALLOWED or NOT ALLOWED. It is a electronic nose to sniff out the offending compound. This sniffing out are processing in a box or a container. The racquet is allowed to keep inside the container for 60 second after keeping open the container for 60 second and the electronic nose differentiate the offending compound with respect to each other and gives the result. For more accurate testing the RAE device may be used. RAE is also testing the ENEZ testing device.
Sometimes common methods are also being used by the organizing committee for testing the glue. The samples are being taken from the racquet through a syringe and dipping it into the testing solvent to check the change of the colour of the solvent. Incase case of the toxic glue the testing solvent will be changed to the brown type colour.
The outcome of the test is now safe for the users and it is enhancing the attraction of the event. It is because the number of rallies of a point i.e. continuation of play is more than earlier now.
