Pollock signs off on a high in LG ICC Player Rankings

ICC MEDIA RELEASE
Dubai, 4 February 2008

Smith, de Villiers, Kallis and Yousuf make upward movements; Powell rises five places to ninth while Ntini drops six places to 15th; Malik breaks into top five in all-rounders’ list; Pakistan leapfrogs Sri Lanka into fifth place in LG ICC ODI Championship table

South Africa ’s Shaun Pollock has signed off from one-day cricket in style by reaching the 500-mark in the all-rounders’ chart in the LG ICC ODI Player Rankings.

Pollock, who has retired after 303 appearances on Sunday after inspiring his side to a 5-0 win over the West Indies, grabbed six wickets and scored 43 runs in the series that helped him finish on 501 points – an impressive 128 points clear of second-placed Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka .

England ’s Andrew Flintoff is ranked third in the list while Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik is in fourth position after breaking into the top five following a good series against Zimbabwe in which he scored 158 runs and picked up 11 wickets.

Pollock also finished off as the top bowler in the LG ICC ODI Player Rankings. However, the 34-year-old missed the coveted 900-mark by one point – something he achieved couple of years ago and reached as high as 920 points after the fifth and last ODI against Pakistan at Johannesburg in 2007.

Pollock’s 393 wickets, 4,056 runs and a third place in the all-time ODI bowlers list behind Joel Garner of the West Indies and Sir Richard Hadlee of New Zealand, makes him one of the greatest ODI all-rounders in the history of the game.

Pollock’s team-mates Graeme Smith , AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis have also reaped the fruit of their good form against the West Indies by making moves in the right direction in the LG ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen.

Smith, who scored 198 runs, leapfrogged Kevin Pietersen of England , Matthew Hayden of Australia and Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan to sit on third place while de Villiers’ series effort of 142 runs has helped him rise three places to 13th position.

Kallis, who was the joint leading run-getter with JP Duminy with 227 runs, has jumped three places to 15th spot while Duminy stays in 69th position despite achieving his career-high ranking.

For the West Indies , Shivnarine Chanderpaul has held his ground in 10th place while Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle, who both missed the series because of injury, have slipped to 16th and 17th positions respectively.

In the LG ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, West Indies ’ Daren Powell has made the biggest impact as his series haul of five wickets in four games lifts him five places to a career-high ninth position.

Powell’s team-mate Jerome Taylor, however, couldn’t retain his place in the top 10 and dropped one spot to 11th after claiming four wickets in the series.

However, there was no good news for the South Africa pace duo of Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel. Ntini, who played just one game in the series, dropped six places to 15th position while Nel’s four wickets in three games slumped him three places to 19th position.

In the series involving Pakistan and Zimbabwe , most of the home team batsmen made the upward movements.

Following a series aggregate of 223, Yousuf climbed one place to fourth place, Malik rose one place to 24th, Yunus Khan improved two places to 30th position and vice-captain Misbah-ul-Haq jumped five places to 85th spot.

For Zimbabwe , Elton Chigumbura is the highest ranked batsman in 45th position after improving two positions. Brendon Taylor in 49th spot, Vusi Sibanda in 59th place and Sean Williams in 66th place are the other notable Zimbabwe batsmen.

In the bowlers’ charts, neither team has a bowler in the top 20 with Pakistan ’s Shahid Afridi the highest ranked bowler in 22nd spot after dropping one place. Prosper Utseya is Zimbabwe ’s best bowler in 31st spot.

In the LG ICC ODI Championship table, second-placed South Africa has edged closer to Australia by earning three ratings points. South Africa now trails the world champions by just three points.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has leapfrogged sixth-placed Sri Lanka and now sits in fifth place with 109 ratings points, leading its Asian rival by just one ratings point and trailing traditional rival India by one point.

The West Indies, which started its series on 100 ratings points, has dropped to 96 ratings points while Zimbabwe conceded two ratings points for its 5-0 defeat against Pakistan .
